Timehop Data Breach – 21 Million Users Personal Data Stolen By Hackers

21 million users are affected With Timehop data breach, attackers steal personal information that includes names, email addresses, social media access tokens and phone numbers.

Timehop is an app for smartphones that collects your old photos and posts from social media such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Dropbox photos and shows the best old moments of your past.

Timehop said out of compromised 21 million accounts only 4.7 of them have phone numbers added with it ad no other data such as private messages, financial data, or social media or photo content, or Timehop data including streaks were affected.

How the Timehop Data Breach Occurs

The breach occurs due to lack of multifactor authentication, hackers compromised the login credentials to Timehop cloud computing environment and the company detected the attack after two hours and nineteen minutes.

Timehop says all the compromised tokens have been deauthorized and these tokens will not give any direct access to Facebook Messenger, or Direct Messages on Twitter or Instagram. Also, the company confirms they have never stored credit card or any financial data, location data, or IP addresses.

What Users Should Do

All the API token deauthorized, users, need to authenticate the service again with the Timehop, so it will generate a new token.

We immediately conducted a user audit and permissions inventory; changed all passwords and keys; added multifactor authentication to all accounts in all cloud-based services. We have no evidence that the data has been used.”
