276 Arrested as Authorities Dismantle Crypto Scam Centers Targeting Americans

In an unprecedented international law enforcement operation, authorities have dismantled at least nine overseas cryptocurrency scam centers, resulting in the arrest of 276 individuals.

The coordinated effort, led by the FBI, Dubai Police, and the Chinese Ministry of Public Security, targeted transnational criminal networks running sophisticated “pig butchering” investment fraud schemes against American citizens.

Threat Intelligence: The “Pig Butchering” Methodology

The dismantled networks operated under the guise of corporate entities, including “Ko Thet Company,” “Sanduo Group,” and “Giant Company”.

Threat actors utilized advanced social engineering tactics to execute long-term “pig butchering” campaigns.

This methodology involves establishing initial contact through fake personas on platforms like Facebook and Instagram, cultivating deep romantic or platonic trust with victims over time.

Once trust is established, actors introduce fraudulent cryptocurrency investment platforms with highly convincing user interfaces.

The fraudulent infrastructure often leverages custom-built applications designed to spoof legitimate financial exchanges.

Threat actors manipulate these digital environments to display fabricated portfolio growth, further enticing victims to liquidate personal assets, borrow money, or secure loans to increase their investments.

Once the deposits are made, the threat actors seize the cryptocurrency and launder the funds through complex transaction chains to their private accounts.

Key Arrests and Indictments

The sweeping operation resulted in 275 arrests by Dubai Police, with one key suspect apprehended by the Royal Thai Police.

The U.S. Department of Justice unsealed federal wire fraud and money laundering conspiracy charges in San Diego against several core organizers.

Key defendants include Thet Min Nyi (27), Wiliang Awang (23), Andreas Chandra (29), and Lisa Mariam (29). If convicted, these individuals face up to 20 years in federal prison and severe financial penalties.

This operation underscores the growing need for cross-border collaboration and public-private partnerships in modern cybersecurity.

The investigation was significantly bolstered by intelligence from Meta Platforms, underscoring the critical role social media companies play in identifying initial compromise vectors.

Furthermore, the FBI’s ongoing “Operation Level Up” initiative has proactively notified approximately 9,000 potential victims, preventing an estimated $562 million in losses as of April 2026.

This massive takedown also aligns with recent federal directives, including a March 2026 Executive Order that aims to combat cyber-enabled fraud aggressively.

To defend against these threats, cybersecurity professionals urge continuous user awareness training regarding unsolicited financial communications.

Organizations and individuals must verify the legitimacy of investment platforms using registered financial databases rather than relying on social media endorsements.

Victims of cyber-enabled fraud are encouraged to report incidents immediately to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) to assist in ongoing threat tracking and potential fund recovery efforts.
