A critical security vulnerability has been disclosed in the popular file archiving tool 7-Zip, allowing attackers to execute arbitrary code remotely.
The flaw, identified as CVE-2024-11477, has been attributed to an integer underflow in the Zstandard decompression implementation, which could lead to remote code execution (RCE).
The vulnerability, CVE-2024-11477 discovered by the Zero Day Initiative (ZDI) and tracked as ZDI-24-1532 (ZDI-CAN-24346), affects the Zstandard decompression library in 7-Zip.
It arises due to insufficient validation of user-supplied data during the decompression process.

This flaw can result in an integer underflow, potentially leading to memory corruption and enabling attackers to execute arbitrary code in the context of the current process.
While user interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability—such as opening a specially crafted archive file—the attack vectors can vary depending on how 7-Zip is implemented within a system.
