Apple Patches Privacy Issue Exposing Signal Message Data Through Notifications

Apple recently rolled out iOS 26.4.2 and iPadOS 26.4.2 to patch a critical privacy vulnerability affecting millions of users.

Released on April 22, 2026, this vital security update addresses a flaw that could accidentally expose sensitive message data from secure applications, most notably Signal.

By downloading this update, users can prevent their private communications from being improperly stored on their devices.

The Core Notification Vulnerability

The security defect, officially tracked as CVE-2026-28950, originates in the Apple Notification Services framework. When you receive a secure message, your iPhone or iPad typically generates a notification preview on the screen.

Under normal circumstances, dismissing or clearing this alert instructs the operating system to delete that temporary text from the device’s memory permanently.

Due to a specific logging error, this deletion process failed. Notifications that users explicitly marked for deletion were unexpectedly retained inside the local system logs. This bug accidentally created a hidden archive of past alerts.

For privacy-conscious individuals who rely on encrypted platforms like Signal, this flaw severely compromised their security.

Even though Signal encrypts messages in transit, the local Apple device logs were capturing and storing readable snippets of those communications.

If a device remained unpatched, anyone with physical access or specialized forensic tools could potentially extract these retained notifications.

This opens the door for unauthorized parties to read private conversations that the user believed were permanently deleted.

Apple confirmed that they addressed this logging issue by improving data redaction. In the iOS 26.4.2 and iPadOS 26.4.2 updates, the system now properly scrubs the notification data.

Once an alert is dismissed, the sensitive text is permanently wiped from all internal logs. In line with its standard security practices, Apple kept the details of this vulnerability strictly confidential until the investigation concluded and the patches were made available to the public.

Affected Apple Hardware

This privacy issue impacts a wide variety of mobile devices. Users should immediately check their system settings and install the latest software updates if they use the following hardware:

  • iPhone 11 and all newer models
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation and later)
  • iPad Pro 11-inch (1st generation and later)
  • iPad Air (3rd generation and later)
  • iPad (8th generation and later)
  • iPad mini (5th generation and later)
