Apple has released urgent security patches addressing CVE-2025-31219, a high-severity vulnerability in its XNU kernel that underpins macOS, iOS, iPadOS, tvOS, watchOS, and visionOS.
The flaw, which carries a CVSS score of 8.8 (vector: AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H), enables local attackers to escalate privileges and potentially execute arbitrary code with kernel-level access.
The vulnerability was discovered by Michael DePlante (@izobashi) and Lucas Leong (@wmliang) of Trend Micro’s Zero Day Initiative and publicly disclosed on May 21, 2025, after being reported to Apple in February.
Apple responded by releasing patches for all supported platforms, including macOS Sequoia 15.5, macOS Sonoma 14.7.6, iOS 18.5, iPadOS 18.5, tvOS 18.5, watchOS 11.5, and visionOS 2.5.
CVE-2025-31219 arises from improper memory handling in the XNU kernel, specifically related to the management of virtual memory allocations.
The flaw is categorized under CWE-119: Improper Restriction of Operations within the Bounds of a Memory Buffer.
The root cause is the lack of proper locking when performing operations on kernel objects, which introduces a race condition.
This means that concurrent access to shared kernel memory can result in unexpected system termination, memory corruption, or privilege escalation.
To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker must first gain the ability to execute code with low privileges on the target system.
Once achieved, the attacker can leverage the race condition to escalate their privileges to kernel level, bypassing system security boundaries and potentially taking full control of the device.
The technical vector for exploitation is described as:
textCVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H
Apple addressed CVE-2025-31219 by improving memory handling and synchronization within the kernel, effectively closing the race condition that enabled privilege escalation.
Security experts emphasize the criticality of applying these updates immediately, as unpatched systems remain vulnerable to local attacks that could result in full system compromise or denial-of-service.
The vulnerability highlights the ongoing challenges of securing complex kernel code, where improper synchronization can have far-reaching consequences.
Organizations and end-users are urged to:
No public proof-of-concept exploit has been observed as of this writing, but the severity and scope of the flaw make prompt remediation essential for maintaining system integrity and security.
