AWS Fixes Severe RCE, Privilege Escalation Flaws in Research and Engineering Studio

AWS recently issued a critical security bulletin addressing severe vulnerabilities in its Research and Engineering Studio (RES). RES is an open-source web portal that allows administrators to create and manage secure cloud-based research environments.

Security researchers identified three major flaws in the platform that could lead to remote code execution (RCE) and privilege escalation.

If exploited, these vulnerabilities could give authenticated attackers deep access into an organization’s cloud infrastructure.

Breakdown of the Vulnerabilities

AWS detailed three specific Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVEs) impacting RES versions 2025.12.01 and earlier.

These flaws primarily stem from unsanitized inputs and improper access controls within the application.

  • CVE-2026-5707 involves unsanitized input within the virtual desktop session name handling. A remote authenticated attacker could exploit this by crafting a malicious session name, allowing them to execute arbitrary OS commands as root on the virtual desktop host.
  • CVE-2026-5708 is a privilege escalation flaw located in the session creation component. By sending a specially crafted API request, an authenticated user could assume the Virtual Desktop Host instance profile permissions, granting them unauthorized access to interact with other AWS services.
  • CVE-2026-5709 exposes the FileBrowser API to command injection due to unsanitized input. This vulnerability allows an authenticated attacker to execute arbitrary commands directly on the core cluster-manager EC2 instance.

The potential impact of these vulnerabilities is significant. An attacker who successfully exploits these flaws could compromise the cluster-manager EC2 instance or gain root access to virtual desktop hosts.

This level of access could lead to data theft, unauthorized resource consumption, or further lateral movement within the larger AWS environment. Because these attacks require the user to be authenticated, the primary risk comes from compromised user accounts or malicious insiders.

AWS has officially resolved these security gaps in RES version 2026.03. Security teams and cloud administrators are strongly urged to upgrade their RES deployments to this latest version immediately.

It is also crucial to ensure that any forked or custom derivative code is updated to include these new security patches.

For organizations that cannot perform an immediate upgrade, AWS offers specific workarounds.

Administrators can apply manual patches to their existing RES environments by following the mitigation instructions provided on the official AWS GitHub repository.

These temporary fixes successfully block the command injection and privilege escalation attack vectors until a full system upgrade can be completed.
