Canon has disclosed a critical security vulnerability in its GUARDIANWALL MailSuite product that could allow attackers to execute arbitrary code remotely, raising serious concerns for organizations relying on the platform for email security.
The issue, officially announced on May 13, 2026, affects GUARDIANWALL MailSuite versions 1.4.00 through 2.4.26.
According to Canon, the flaw stems from a stack-based buffer overflow in a specific command within the system, potentially enabling threat actors to compromise vulnerable servers through specially crafted requests.
The vulnerability resides in the “pop3wallpasswd” command, a component of the MailSuite system. If exploited, an attacker can send a malicious request to the product’s web service, triggering a buffer overflow. This allows the execution of arbitrary code on the target system.
Such vulnerabilities are particularly dangerous because they can lead to full system compromise, including unauthorized access, data exfiltration, or deployment of malware such as ransomware.
The issue has also been cataloged by the Japan Vulnerability Notes (JVN) under identifier JVN#35567473, confirming its severity and broader industry recognition.
Affected Systems
The following versions are impacted:
Organizations running affected versions are strongly urged to take immediate action to reduce exposure.
Canon has released patches to address the vulnerability and distributed them directly to customers via support channels. Applying the patch is the recommended and most effective mitigation.
For organizations unable to patch immediately, Canon recommends a temporary workaround: turning off the MailSuite administration interface. This reduces the attack surface but may disrupt normal operations.
To stop the administration service, administrators can run:
To restart the service:
While effective as a temporary measure, Canon emphasizes that patching should be prioritized given the workaround’s operational limitations.
This flaw highlights the ongoing risks associated with buffer overflow vulnerabilities, which remain a common entry point for attackers targeting enterprise infrastructure.
Email security gateways like GUARDIANWALL are especially attractive targets because they sit at the perimeter of corporate networks and process large volumes of external data.
A successful exploit could allow attackers to bypass traditional defenses and gain a foothold inside internal systems.
Canon has acknowledged the issue and apologized for the inconvenience caused, noting that affected customers were notified earlier in May via direct communication. Security experts recommend that organizations audit their deployments immediately and monitor for unusual activity, particularly involving web service requests to MailSuite systems.
