ChatGPT Chrome Extension Expands Browser Access to Read Open Tab Content

OpenAI has announced an expanded Chrome integration that lets ChatGPT gather information from open browser tabs and take action within the browser.

This update introduces two distinct workflows: “Chat,” which uses tab content to inform its responses, and “Work,” which can control tabs to complete tasks. The announcement was made on ChatGPT’s official account on X.

For cybersecurity teams, this significant change combines browser visibility with delegated actions. By reading information from multiple tabs, the assistant gains expanded contextual understanding.

However, controlling those tabs raises security concerns regarding authenticated sessions, sensitive information, and the line between user instructions and webpage content.

According to the announcement, ChatGPT can scan open Chrome tabs in Chat mode to gather information and make its answers more relevant. In Work mode, it can interact with those tabs to send messages, fill out forms, download files, and organize or group open tabs.

These capabilities elevate the assistant beyond merely answering questions based on information manually entered into the conversation. Users can ask it to consolidate information already open in their browser. At the same time, action-oriented workflows might involve completing tasks on websites.

However, the announcement does not specify the extension’s technical architecture, its Chrome permission scopes, or whether access applies automatically to every open tab. It also does not clarify how it selects, transmits, retains, or excludes tab content from processing, details that are crucial for evaluating potential exposure.

The primary security issue centers on authorization: What information can the assistant read? What actions may it perform, and when does the user need to approve these actions?

For enterprise environments, this distinction is vital, as browser tabs could contain internal documents, customer records, administrative dashboards, and other sensitive materials. Organizations assessing this integration should determine whether they can restrict access to specific sites, tabs, accounts, or browser profiles.

Another important consideration is how the assistant handles instructions embedded in webpages. Security reviewers should determine whether untrusted page content could influence subsequent actions, especially when workflows shift from reading information to composing messages or submitting forms.

These points are evaluative questions, not conclusive evidence of a vulnerability in the announced integration. The announcement does not indicate a security incident, exploitation campaign, or confirmed bypass.

Before approving deployment, security teams should review the extension’s verified publisher, requested permissions, data handling documentation, and available administrative controls.

Testing should confirm whether significant actions require user confirmation, whether users can review planned submissions, and whether activities are recorded for future investigations. Using separate browser profiles may also help organizations define appropriate work contexts for assistant access.

While the announcement clarifies the intended functionality, it omits key operational safeguards. Therefore, deployment decisions should be based on verified implementation details rather than assumptions about unrestricted access or built-in protections.
