ChatGPT Guardrail Bypass Vulnerability Exposes LFI Risk Through Download Flow

A now-patched guardrail bypass in ChatGPT that could be exploited through a Local File Inclusion (LFI) vulnerability via its file download mechanism.

This incident underscores how logic flaws in large language model (LLM) workflows, particularly concerning temporary file handling and access controls, can create exploitable weaknesses, even in sandboxed environments.

ChatGPT Guardrail Bypass Vulnerability

The vulnerability arises during a standard file upload to the ChatGPT interface, where users can submit content for analysis. Under normal circumstances, OpenAI’s system enforces strict guardrails: uploaded files are treated as temporary artifacts, and any attempt to request direct download access is denied, with the model indicating that the file has already been deleted.

This behavior is consistent with protections against sensitive data exposure, which fall under the OWASP Top 10 for LLMs category LLM02:2025 (Sensitive Information Disclosure).

However, the researcher “zer0dac” found a way to bypass this protocol. By first prompting the model to “edit” or interact with the uploaded file and then requesting a recovery download link under the guise of accidental deletion, the system generated a valid download URL.

This sequence effectively circumvented the intended restriction, revealing an internal endpoint for file retrieval. The generated link included parameters such as a conversation ID, message ID, and a sandbox file path (e.g., “/mnt/data/test.html”), providing structural insights into backend file storage.

In the second stage of the exploit, this exposed endpoint was leveraged to achieve LFI through path traversal. Instead of directly injecting a traversal payload like “../../../../etc/passwd”, which may be blocked by validation filters, the PoC demonstrated a technique that appends traversal sequences to an existing valid path.

For instance, modifying the parameter to “/mnt/data/test.html/../../../../etc/passwd” allows the request to appear legitimate while bypassing directory restrictions. When executed, the modified download URL returned the system’s “/etc/passwd” file, confirming successful file inclusion.

Although the execution environment was sandboxed, limiting direct access to sensitive host-level resources, the researcher noted that such vulnerabilities can serve as critical components in multi-stage attack chains.

Path traversal and LFI vulnerabilities, when combined with other weaknesses, could enable broader compromise scenarios, including data exfiltration or privilege escalation.

OpenAI has since addressed the issue by redesigning the download URL flow, preventing unauthorized link generation, and enhancing validation around file access paths.

This fix emphasizes the importance of enforcing strict state management and contextual access controls in LLM-integrated systems, especially where dynamic file handling is involved.

This case reinforces a growing trend in AI security: vulnerabilities are increasingly arising not from traditional memory corruption bugs, but from workflow logic flaws and inconsistencies in guardrails.

As LLM-powered applications continue to expand, ensuring robust validation across conversational states and backend integrations remains crucial to preventing exploitation.
