The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has issued an urgent warning regarding a critical SQL injection vulnerability in Drupal Core, tracked as CVE-2026-9082, which is now being actively exploited in the wild.
The flaw has been added to CISA’s Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog, signaling a high risk to organizations using affected Drupal deployments.
The vulnerability impacts Drupal Core and stems from improper handling of user-supplied input within the platform’s database abstraction API. Classified under CWE-89 (SQL Injection), the flaw allows attackers to execute malicious SQL queries through specially crafted requests.
Successful exploitation could enable threat actors to escalate privileges, access sensitive database contents, and potentially achieve remote code execution (RCE) on vulnerable systems. This significantly increases the risk for websites relying on Drupal for content management and backend operations.
CISA added CVE-2026-9082 to its KEV catalog on May 22, 2026, requiring federal agencies to remediate the issue by May 27, 2026. The inclusion highlights confirmed exploitation activity in real-world attacks. However, no specific ransomware campaigns have yet been publicly attributed to this vulnerability.
Under Binding Operational Directive (BOD) 22-01, federal agencies must apply vendor-recommended mitigations or discontinue use of affected products if fixes are unavailable.
Attackers can exploit this vulnerability remotely without authentication by sending crafted HTTP requests targeting Drupal’s database layer. Because Drupal powers many enterprise and government websites, the attack surface is significant.
The flaw is particularly dangerous in environments where database access controls are weak or where web application firewalls (WAFs) are not properly configured to detect injection attempts.
Organizations using Drupal Core are strongly advised to take immediate action:
If patches are unavailable or cannot be applied immediately, organizations should consider temporarily turning off vulnerable services or restricting external access.
This incident highlights a broader trend of attackers targeting widely used content management systems (CMS) to gain initial access into enterprise environments. SQL injection remains one of the most exploited vulnerabilities due to its simplicity and high impact.
Security teams are encouraged to prioritize patch management and to monitor threat intelligence continuously for updates on CVE-2026-9082 and similar vulnerabilities.
As exploitation continues, timely remediation will be critical in preventing data breaches and potential system compromise.
