Networking and security leader Cisco has announced its intent to acquire Astrix Security, a pioneer in Non-Human Identity (NHI) management.
Announced in May 2026, this acquisition is designed to help enterprises secure the rapidly expanding “agentic workforce”, the growing ecosystem of autonomous AI agents that operate alongside human employees.
As organizations integrate AI into their daily workflows, these agents require access to critical data and infrastructure. However, they also introduce a massive, often unmonitored attack surface that threat actors are eager to exploit.
AI agents are reshaping enterprise productivity by accessing data, making independent decisions, and executing tasks at machine speed.
To do this, they rely on non-human identities and credentials such as API keys, service accounts, and OAuth tokens.
Unfortunately, security models are failing to keep pace with AI adoption. Cisco’s recent AI Readiness Index reveals that only 24% of organizations currently have the guardrails and live monitoring required to control AI agent actions.
Meanwhile, cybercriminals are leveraging advanced AI models, such as Mythos, to exploit these exact visibility gaps.
This leaves security teams confronting a new class of high-impact, AI-accelerated threats where compromised machine credentials can lead to unauthorized data access and privilege escalation.
Founded five years ago, Astrix Security specializes in discovering and securing the machine credentials that power modern systems. By acquiring Astrix, Cisco aims to close the governance gap and enable organizations to adopt AI securely at scale.
The integration of Astrix Security introduces several core capabilities to Cisco’s portfolio:
Cisco plans to fold Astrix Security’s technology directly into Cisco Identity Intelligence, enhancing contextual visibility across the entire Cisco Security platform.
These NHI capabilities will also extend into Cisco’s Zero Trust access solutions, including Cisco Secure Access and Duo Identity and Access Management.
By unifying identity discovery, access enforcement, and runtime behavioral protection, Cisco is effectively applying Zero Trust principles to machine identities.
Furthermore, telemetry from these monitored AI agents will feed directly into Splunk and other SIEM platforms.
This integration provides Security Operations Centers (SOCs) with a unified view of both human and machine activity, empowering them to investigate and respond to emerging AI-driven threats at machine speed.
