CISA Warns of Cisco Smart Install Feature Actively Exploited by Hackers

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has raised alarms over malicious cyber actors’ active exploitation of the Cisco Smart Install feature.

This legacy feature, originally designed to simplify the deployment of new switches, is now being leveraged by hackers to gain unauthorized access to system configuration files, posing significant security risks to organizations worldwide.

Exploitation of Legacy Features

CISA’s warning highlights the growing trend of cyber attackers exploiting outdated or inadequately secured network features.

While convenient, the Cisco Smart Install feature has become a vulnerability that hackers are actively targeting.

By abusing this feature, cybercriminals can potentially read or modify a switch’s configuration, leading to broader network compromises. CISA strongly recommends that organizations disable the Smart Install feature to mitigate these risks.

Additionally, they advise reviewing the National Security Agency’s (NSA) Smart Install Protocol Misuse advisory and Network Infrastructure Security Guide for detailed configuration guidance.

These resources provide critical insights into securing network infrastructure against such exploits.

Weak Passwords: A Persistent Threat

In addition to exploiting the Smart Install feature, CISA has identified the continued use of weak password types on Cisco network devices as a significant security threat.

Weak password algorithms make it easier for attackers to crack passwords and gain access to sensitive configuration files.

Once inside, these actors can compromise entire networks, leading to potentially devastating consequences. To counter this threat, CISA recommends implementing type 8 password protection for all Cisco devices.

This method, approved by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), offers a more secure alternative to older password types.

Organizations are urged to follow best practices for password security, including using strong, complex passwords, avoiding password reuse, and eliminating the use of group accounts that lack accountability.

CISA’s advisory underscores the importance of proactive cybersecurity measures. Organizations are encouraged to utilize resources like Cisco’s PSIRT blog and CISA’s Internet scanning summary page to stay informed about current vulnerabilities and threats.

Tracking exposure to the Cisco Smart Install feature through CISA’s Dashboard can also help organizations identify and address potential risks.

The severity of these vulnerabilities is categorized and detailed in CISA’s reports, which include information on affected IP addresses, protocols, and geographic locations.

By leveraging these tools and adhering to recommended security practices, organizations can significantly enhance their network defenses and reduce the likelihood of successful cyberattacks.
