Cisco has released a high-priority security advisory regarding a critical vulnerability in its Smart Software Manager On-Prem (SSM On-Prem) platform.
The flaw, tracked as CVE-2026-20160, carries a near-maximum CVSS severity score of 9.8 out of 10.
If exploited, it enables an unauthenticated, remote attacker to execute arbitrary commands with root privileges on the underlying operating system.
Cisco SSM On-Prem is a license management solution that helps organisations securely monitor and manage their Cisco software licenses within their own network.
Because this system often integrates deeply into enterprise environments, a root-level compromise presents a severe risk to corporate infrastructure.
Cisco Smart Software Manager Flaw
The vulnerability stems from the unintentional exposure of an internal service within the SSM On-Prem environment.
Threat actors can exploit this weakness by sending specially crafted requests directly to the exposed service’s API.
Because the flaw does not require any prior authentication or user interaction, it represents a straightforward target for automated attacks.
Gaining root access allows an attacker to take complete control over the host machine. From there, they could potentially pivot into other areas of the network, steal sensitive data, or deploy malicious payloads.
Cisco discovered the issue internally while resolving a Technical Assistance Center (TAC) support case.
The company’s Product Security Incident Response Team (PSIRT) has confirmed that there is currently no evidence of public exploitation or malicious use in the wild.
Affected Software and Fixes
Administrators must verify their current software versions to determine if their environments are exposed.
The vulnerability status for Cisco infrastructure is as follows:
- Cisco SSM On-Prem releases spanning from 9-202502 to 9-202510 are vulnerable.
- Cisco SSM On-Prem version 9-202601 is the official fixed release.
- Releases prior to 9-202502 are not vulnerable to this specific flaw.
- Cisco Smart Licensing Utility and SSM satellite products remain unaffected.
Cisco explicitly states that there are no workarounds or temporary mitigations available to block this attack path. The only way to secure the environment is to apply the official software update.
IT administrators utilizing SSM On-Prem should treat this as a critical patching priority.
Organizations are advised to consult the official Cisco Security Advisory and upgrade to version 9-202601 immediately to prevent potential network compromise.
