Claude Code Lets Users Control Terminal Sessions Remotely from Their Phones

Anthropic has unveiled a significant update to its Claude Code platform, introducing a new “Remote Control” feature.

This capability allows developers to manage terminal sessions directly from their smartphones or remote web browsers, bridging the gap between desktop development and mobile accessibility.

The feature is currently available in a Research Preview phase for Claude Max users, with a broader rollout planned for Pro users in the near future.

By executing the simple command claude rc, developers can initiate a session that remains active on their local machine while being fully controllable from external devices.

Seamless Task Management Across Devices

The primary advantage of Claude Code’s Remote Control is the ability to maintain workflow continuity.

Developers can start a complex or time-consuming task in their desktop terminal and seamlessly transition to monitoring or guiding the process via the Claude mobile app or the web interface at claude.ai/code.

This flexibility is particularly useful for tasks that require long processing times, such as compiling large codebases, running extensive test suites, or training machine learning models.

This means developers no longer need to remain tethered to their workstations. They can review output, provide necessary approvals, or adjust commands while attending meetings, commuting, or stepping away from their desks.

The local machine continues to handle the computational heavy lifting, while the mobile interface acts as a remote command center, as reported by Claude.

While Anthropic emphasizes the convenience of this feature, remote access to local terminal sessions inherently introduces security considerations.

Giving a cloud service, even one as sophisticated as Claude, direct control over local execution environments requires robust authentication and secure communication channels.

Organizations utilizing Claude Code will need to evaluate the security implications of enabling remote terminal access, especially concerning sensitive data or critical infrastructure.

Proper configuration and adherence to security best practices will be essential to mitigate potential risks associated with exposing local development environments to remote control.

As the feature transitions from Research Preview to general availability, further details regarding the underlying security architecture and enterprise-level controls are anticipated.

For now, the introduction of Remote Control marks a notable step toward more flexible and ubiquitous AI-assisted development workflows.
