ConnectWise has released a security update to address a high-severity vulnerability in its ConnectWise Automate remote monitoring and management (RMM) platform, a widely used tool for managed service providers (MSPs).
The flaw, tracked as CVE-2026-9089, carries a CVSS score of 8.8 and could allow attackers to bypass integrity verification mechanisms, potentially enabling unauthorized code execution within managed environments.
The vulnerability exists in the agent’s plugin loading and self-update processes. According to the advisory, certain components downloaded during these operations may be processed without full integrity checks before being executed.
This weakness falls under CWE-494, which refers to the download of code without proper validation. Because the agent may trust and load these components prematurely, attackers could exploit this gap to introduce malicious payloads into the system.
Successful exploitation of this vulnerability could have significant consequences, particularly in environments where ConnectWise Automate is used to manage multiple endpoints.
Attackers could execute arbitrary code, compromise system integrity, and potentially gain persistent access across networks. Given the centralized nature of RMM tools, this type of flaw poses a broader supply chain risk, especially for MSPs managing multiple client infrastructures.
The vulnerability requires no user interaction and has low attack complexity, increasing its potential impact despite being rated as “Important” with moderate priority by ConnectWise.
At the time of disclosure, there are no confirmed reports of active exploitation. However, vulnerabilities in RMM platforms are often targeted by threat actors because they enable large-scale access to enterprise systems.
If exploited, attackers could bypass security controls, move laterally within networks, and disrupt operations by affecting confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
ConnectWise has resolved the issue in Automate version 2026.5 by introducing enhanced integrity verification for all agent components, ensuring that downloaded files are properly validated before execution.
Cloud-hosted instances have already been automatically updated, while on-premises deployments must be manually upgraded to the latest version. Users are advised to apply the patch within normal change management timelines, preferably within 30 days.
Security teams should also take additional precautions, such as monitoring for unusual agent activity, restricting access to management interfaces, and deploying endpoint detection and response (EDR) solutions to identify suspicious behavior.
This vulnerability highlights the ongoing risks to software integrity. It underscores the importance of robust validation mechanisms and timely patch management in enterprise environments.
