Critical Android Zero-Click Vulnerability Enables Remote Shell Access

Google has released the Android Security Bulletin for May 2026, addressing a highly critical vulnerability that allows attackers to execute code remotely without any user interaction.

Published on May 4, 2026, the latest security update focuses heavily on a severe flaw located within the Android System component. Threat actors can exploit this vulnerability to gain remote shell access to a targeted mobile device.

Because the exploit requires no user interaction and no additional execution privileges, the severity assessment for this flaw is critical.

Understanding CVE-2026-0073

Tracked as CVE-2026-0073, this critical Remote Code Execution (RCE) vulnerability resides in the System component, specifically tied to the Android Debug Bridge Daemon (adbd) subcomponent under Project Mainline.

The attack vector is classified as proximal or adjacent, meaning an attacker must be on the same local network or in close physical proximity to the target device.

This makes shared environments, such as public Wi-Fi networks or Bluetooth connection ranges, potential hunting grounds for threat actors.

Once positioned appropriately, an attacker can trigger the vulnerability to execute arbitrary code. The exploit grants the attacker the same privileges as the shell user.

This level of access allows the threat actor to bypass typical Android sandboxing protections, execute system-level commands, and potentially compromise sensitive data stored on the device.

Affected Versions and Components

The vulnerability impacts several modern iterations of the Android operating system. Users and administrators managing corporate fleets are strongly advised to check their current firmware environments.

The specific Android Open Source Project (AOSP) versions affected by CVE-2026-0073 include the following releases:

  • Devices running Android 14.
  • Devices running Android 15.
  • Devices running Android 16.
  • Devices running Android 16-qpr2.

Because the flawed adbd component is part of Project Mainline, Google can push specific fixes directly through Google Play system updates.

This mechanism enables much faster remediation on devices running Android 10 or later, effectively bypassing the traditional wait times associated with carrier or hardware manufacturer approvals.

To mitigate the risks associated with CVE-2026-0073, users must ensure their devices are updated to the 2026-05-01 security patch level or later. Applying this update fully patches the critical system vulnerability along with other minor platform bugs.

Device manufacturers deploying these updates will set their system patch string level to 2026-05-01.

Users can manually verify their device’s status by navigating to their system settings and checking the Android version and security update timeline.

Furthermore, the Android security team emphasizes that built-in platform enhancements, such as Google Play Protect, actively monitor for suspicious behavior and reduce the overall likelihood of successful exploitation.

Organizations should prioritize deploying the May 2026 updates immediately to secure their mobile fleets against potential adjacent network attacks.
