Critical D-Link Router Flaw Allows Attackers to Take Full Remote Control

A critical unauthenticated Remote Code Execution (RCE) vulnerability has been identified in D-Link’s DSL-3788 routers, specifically hardware revisions Ax/Bx running firmware version v1.01R1B036_EU_EN or below.

This flaw enables attackers to gain full remote access to the device, posing significant security and privacy risks.

The vulnerability, reported on November 25, 2024, by Max Bellia of SECURE NETWORK BVTECH, stemmed from improper input validation in the “COMM_MakeCustomMsg” function of the libssap library.

By exploiting this flaw using a maliciously crafted session ID, attackers could trigger a buffer overflow, allowing arbitrary code execution remotely.

D-Link Routers Flaw

D-Link acted swiftly, initiating an investigation and patching process immediately upon receiving the report. As a result, a fixed firmware version (v1.01R1B037) was released on January 27, 2025, within 90 days of the initial disclosure.

D-Link emphasized its commitment to user privacy and network security by issuing this update to resolve the vulnerability. All users of the affected model are strongly encouraged to install the latest firmware to protect their devices.

To safeguard against this vulnerability, users must follow these steps:

  1. Download and Install the Firmware Update: Visit the D-Link support page, download firmware version v1.01R1B037, and update your router.
  2. Verify the Firmware Version: After installation, confirm that the updated firmware is reflected in your router’s interface.
  3. Check Hardware Revision: Ensure you download firmware compatible with your device’s hardware revision. This can be found on your device’s label or web interface.
  4. Enable Automatic Updates: To minimize future risks, enable automatic updates to ensure your router receives the latest patches as they are released.

D-Link’s swift response to this issue is a testament to its dedication to network security.

However, the onus also lies with users to act promptly to install updates and stay informed about potential risks.
