Critical Gardyn Flaws Open Smart Garden Devices to Remote Hijacking

A recently updated advisory from the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has revealed severe vulnerabilities in Gardyn Home Kit systems.

These critical flaws carry a maximum CVSS score of 9.3 and could allow malicious actors to hijack smart gardening devices remotely.

According to the April 2026 alert, successful exploitation enables unauthenticated attackers to completely compromise edge devices and access sensitive user information stored in the cloud.

The vulnerability report highlights that attackers could use a compromised device to pivot deeper into the Gardyn cloud environment.

This means a single hijacked smart garden could serve as a gateway to attack other connected systems on the same network.

Security researcher Michael Groberman originally discovered and reported these extensive security gaps to CISA.

Severe Vulnerability Details

The CISA advisory, classified as Update A, adds several newly cataloged flaws to an initial February release.

These vulnerabilities encompass numerous CVE identifiers, including CVE-2025-1242, CVE-2025-10681, CVE-2026-28766, and CVE-2026-32662.

The flaws specifically affect the Gardyn Mobile Application for versions before 2.11.0 and the Gardyn Cloud API for versions before 2.12.2026. Both the Gardyn Home Firmware and Gardyn Studio Firmware are also listed as affected components.

These vulnerabilities stem from foundational security failures in how the devices handle authentication and data transmission. Specific technical weaknesses identified in the systems include:

  • Improper neutralization of special elements leading to dangerous OS command injection.
  • Transmission of sensitive user information and data in plain cleartext.
  • Use of hard-coded and default credentials for system and network access.
  • Missing authentication checks for critical device functions and cloud interactions.
  • Authorization bypass achieved through manipulating user-controlled keys.
  • Active debug code left running in production hardware environments.

These combined vulnerabilities create a highly dangerous scenario where attackers do not need prior authentication to seize control of the hardware or cloud infrastructure.

Despite the severity of these flaws, CISA notes that no public exploitation has been reported in the wild to date.

Given the critical nature of these vulnerabilities within the Food and Agriculture sector, CISA strongly urges organizations and individual users to implement immediate defensive measures.

Since the affected devices are primarily deployed in the United States, users in this region should be especially vigilant.

CISA recommends the following mitigation strategies to secure vulnerable environments:

  • Update the Gardyn Mobile Application to version 2.11.0 or later to patch mobile access vulnerabilities.
  • Minimize network exposure by ensuring control system devices are never accessible directly from the internet.
  • Isolate remote devices and control system networks behind robust firewalls to block unauthorized traffic.
  • Use secure methods, such as updated Virtual Private Networks, when remote access is necessary.

Device owners should conduct a thorough risk assessment before implementing these network changes to avoid operational disruptions.

Users who observe any suspicious network activity linked to their smart garden devices should immediately follow internal incident response procedures and report their findings to CISA for further investigation.
