Critical Grafana Flaws Allow Attackers to Achieve Remote Code Execution

Grafana Labs has rolled out critical security updates to address two severe vulnerabilities impacting its widely used analytics and interactive visualization platform.

The most severe flaw could allow threat actors to achieve full Remote Code Execution (RCE) and establish an SSH connection to the host server.

Administrators are strongly advised to apply the security patches immediately to secure their monitoring environments.

The most pressing threat is tracked as CVE-2026-27876, a critical vulnerability with a CVSS score of 9.1.

Affecting Grafana versions 11.6.0 and later, this flaw stems from an arbitrary file write vulnerability within Grafana’s SQL expressions feature.

This feature normally allows users to transform query data using familiar SQL syntax.

However, attackers can abuse this functionality to write arbitrary files directly to the host’s file system.

By chaining several attack vectors together, adversaries can escalate this file write access into full remote code execution.

Exploitation requires the attacker to have at least Viewer permissions to execute data source queries, and the sqlExpressions feature toggle must be actively enabled on the target instance.

Once these prerequisites are met, an attacker could overwrite a Sqlyze driver or maliciously modify an AWS data source configuration file.

Grafana researchers have successfully confirmed that this attack chain can yield a direct remote SSH connection to the underlying host infrastructure.

The second vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2026-27880, carries a high-severity CVSS score of 7.5 and affects Grafana versions 12.1.0 and later.

This flaw involves Grafana’s OpenFeature feature flag validation endpoints. These specific endpoints fail to require authentication while simultaneously accepting unbounded user input.

Because the application reads this unfiltered input directly into memory, unauthenticated remote attackers can intentionally flood the endpoint with massive data payloads.

This forces the server to rapidly exhaust its available memory, resulting in a complete application crash and a sustained Denial-of-Service (DoS) condition.

To effectively secure systems, administrators must upgrade to the latest patched releases: Grafana versions 12.4.2, 12.3.6, 12.2.8, 12.1.10, or 11.6.14.

Organizations utilizing managed services like Grafana Cloud, Amazon Managed Grafana, and Azure Managed Grafana are already protected, as these providers received early embargoed notifications and proactively deployed the patches.

If immediate upgrading is not feasible, security teams can implement temporary workarounds.

For the critical RCE flaw, administrators should completely disable the sqlExpressions feature toggle.

Alternatively, organizations must disable all installed AWS data sources and either remove the Sqlyze driver entirely or update it to version 1.5.0 or higher.

To mitigate the high-severity DoS vulnerability, teams should deploy Grafana in a highly available environment configured for automatic restarts, or place the application behind a reverse proxy like Nginx or Cloudflare to strictly limit inbound client payload sizes.
