Security researchers have issued warnings that attackers are actively exploiting a critical authentication bypass vulnerability in JFrog Artifactory, tracked as CVE-2026-82329. This vulnerability allows the generation of administrator-level access tokens.
According to a post from the security research firm watchTowr dated September 1, its threat intelligence team has already observed exploitation activities targeting this flaw.
The attacks involve adversaries creating administrator tokens for themselves, enabling unauthorized users to gain privileged, persistent access to vulnerable Artifactory environments.
JFrog Artifactory is widely utilized by software development teams as a repository manager for binaries, build artifacts, packages, containers, and dependencies.
Because it often resides within CI/CD pipelines and has access to sensitive development resources, a compromise of Artifactory can provide attackers with a significant pathway into an organization’s software supply chain.
An authentication bypass that allows for the creation of administrator tokens is particularly alarming. It enables attackers to operate as legitimate privileged users, avoiding noisier exploit methods after the initial breach.
With administrator-level tokens, a threat actor could potentially:
In a software supply chain scenario, an attacker could replace a trusted internal dependency with a backdoored version. Subsequent automated builds that fetch the altered component could then distribute malicious code through applications, containers, or release packages.
watchTowr reported that its intelligence team had already detected exploitation of CVE-2026-82329 in the wild as of September 1.
The public post did not provide technical exploit details, affected versions, indicators of compromise, or the number of organizations targeted.
This limited disclosure means that defenders should not assume a lack of obvious alerts indicates safety. Organizations should treat Artifactory instances, especially internet-exposed deployments, as potentially high-risk until they can verify patch status and review authentication activity.
The report also emphasizes a recurring issue with repository management platforms: privileged access to a package repository can have consequences that extend well beyond the repository itself.
Artifactory commonly integrates with developer identities, CI/CD tools, artifact signing workflows, container registries, cloud services, and production deployment processes.
