Firefox 80.0 Released with Several Security Fixes and Performance Updates

Recently, Mozilla Foundation has released Firefox 80.0 that comes with several security fixes and performance updates. But this new version didn’t offer too many exciting features; instead, it comes with several security fixes.

Apart from this, the significant Linux change in Firefox 80 is that it’s currently promoting the VA-API acceleration on X11. This significant Linux change can allow the video Acceleration API spearheaded by Intel. 

It is also used by other Mesa drivers with the Gallium3D video acceleration. Mozilla Firefox has updated its new versions on August 25, 2020, soon after all the channels of Mozilla Firefox are updated to the latest versions.

Newly added features

Some exciting features are added to the Firefox 80.0 versions, and here they are mentioned below:-

  • New add-ons blocklist
  • Alt-Tab previews increased from 6 to 7
  • New Permissions policy that has been updated to support virtual presence notifications
  • AV1 and dav1d enabled by default on Android
  • SVG title and desc elements 
  • The web Animations API compositing operations are now enabled
  • Media Session API supports seekto action
  • Media Session API supports skipad action
  • Modify search suggestions 
  • Navigate multiple pages
  • WebRender support
  • Remove bookmarks by swiping to the left or right
  • Animations are reduced for users 

Vulnerabilities fixed

The experts affirmed that there are a total of 10 vulnerabilities that are fixed in the new version of Firefox 80.0, and here they are mentioned below:-

CVE-2020-15663: Downgrade attack on the Mozilla maintenance service could have resulted in an escalation of privilege.

CVE-2020-15664: Attacker-induced prompt for extension installation.

CVE-2020-12401: Timing-attack on ECDSA signature generation.

CVE-2020-6829: P-384 and P-521 vulnerable to an electro-magnetic side-channel attack on signature generation.

CVE-2020-12400: P-384 and P-521 vulnerable to side-channel attack on modular inversion

CVE-2020-15665: The address bar is not reset when choosing to stay on a page after the beforeunload dialog is shown.

CVE-2020-15666: MediaError message property leaks cross-origin response status.

CVE-2020-15667: Heap overflow when processing an update file.

CVE-2020-15668: Data race when reading certificate information.

CVE-2020-15670: Memory safety bugs fixed in Firefox 80 and Firefox ESR 78.2.

Moreover, the all-new Mozilla Firefox 80.0 is very easy to adapt as its feature are relatively light, and its changes aren’t due to the modern major layoffs at Mozilla, as all the features that are included on Firefox 80.0 were already protected.
