Firefox’s Future Uncertain Without Google Search Deal, Insider Warns

Mozilla’s Chief Financial Officer testified that Firefox could face extinction if Justice Department proposals targeting Google’s search dominance are fully implemented, revealing the browser’s precarious financial position amid ongoing antitrust proceedings.

Mozilla Corporation CFO Eric Muhlheim delivered stark testimony Friday, characterizing the potential loss of Google search revenue as “very frightening” for the organization’s future.

According to Muhlheim, Firefox generates approximately 90 percent of Mozilla’s total revenue, with a staggering 85 percent of that browser revenue stemming directly from its search default agreement with Google.

The court has already ruled Google maintains an illegal monopoly in search, partially through exclusionary default placement deals with browsers like Firefox.

Should the Justice Department’s proposed remedies be implemented-which include prohibiting Google from paying to be the default search engine in third-party browsers-Mozilla would face “significant cuts across the company,” Muhlheim warned.

The executive described a potential “downward spiral” scenario where reduced funding would necessitate scaling back Firefox’s product engineering investments, making the browser less competitive and accelerating user attrition.

This cascading effect could ultimately “put Firefox out of business” and reduce funding for Mozilla’s nonprofit initiatives including open source web tools and AI climate change research.

Alternative Search Engines Fail Monetization Benchmarks

Mozilla’s internal assessments reveal significant monetization gaps with potential Google alternatives.

In testimony based on a December 2024 board presentation, Muhlheim disclosed that Mozilla conducted a 2021-2022 study quietly switching some Firefox users from Google to Microsoft’s Bing.

Results demonstrated Bing generated substantially less revenue per user, undermining its viability as a replacement default engine.

The organization’s historical experience reinforces these concerns. Between 2014 and 2017, Mozilla designated Yahoo as Firefox’s default search engine but discovered users so disliked the experience that many abandoned Firefox entirely for competing browsers.

While Microsoft has expressed interest in securing default placement for Bing, Muhlheim testified that without competitive bidding from Google, any revenue-sharing agreement would likely offer significantly reduced terms.

“We would be really struggling to stay alive,” Muhlheim stated regarding the transition period before potential new search competitors could emerge.

Gecko Engine’s Future at Stake Amid Browser Ecosystem Concerns

The potential collapse of Firefox raises broader technical concerns for web standards and competition.

Muhlheim emphasized that Firefox’s underlying Gecko rendering engine represents “the only browser engine that is held not by Big Tech but by a nonprofit.

” The web currently operates on three primary browser engines: Google’s Chromium, Apple’s WebKit, and Mozilla’s Gecko.

The CFO testified that Mozilla originally developed Gecko to prevent Microsoft from controlling internet protocols, ensuring browser interoperability and preventing single-company dominance of web standards.

Despite supporting browser choice screens on devices, Mozilla opposes mandated search engine choice screens within browsers.

Muhlheim defended this position, stating “Choice is a core value for us, but context matters,” and noting Firefox provides “a thousand different search points” for users.

When questioned by Judge Amit Mehta about potential benefits from having multiple high-quality search competitors, Muhlheim acknowledged: “If we were suddenly in that world, that would be a world that would be better for Mozilla.”
