Grafana Labs Confirms Security Incident Involving GitHub Codebase Access

Grafana Labs has confirmed a security incident involving unauthorized access to its internal GitHub environment, after a threat actor obtained a compromised access token and downloaded portions of the company’s codebase.

The disclosure, made via an official statement on May 17, 2026, highlights growing risks around credential leaks and software supply chain exposure.

Grafana Labs Security Incident

According to Grafana, the attacker gained access via a leaked token that enabled access to its GitHub repositories.

This allowed the unauthorized party to clone or download source code, raising concerns about potential exposure of intellectual property and downstream security implications. However, the company emphasized that the breach was limited strictly to its code environment.

Importantly, Grafana stated that its investigation found no evidence of customer data access, personal information exposure, or impact on customer systems and operations.

This suggests that the incident was contained within development infrastructure and did not extend into production environments or user data stores.

Following detection, Grafana Labs initiated an immediate forensic investigation to determine the root cause of the compromise.

The company reported that it has identified the likely source of the credential leak and has since invalidated the compromised token. Additional security controls have also been implemented to prevent similar incidents, although specific technical details were not disclosed.

In a concerning development, the threat actor reportedly attempted to extort Grafana by demanding payment in exchange for not releasing the stolen codebase.

Such tactics are increasingly common in modern cyber incidents, where attackers leverage stolen data for financial gain even when traditional ransomware encryption is not deployed.

Grafana Labs confirmed that it has refused to comply with the extortion demand. The company cited guidance from the FBI, which advises against paying ransoms due to the lack of guarantee that stolen data will be recovered or deleted, and the risk of encouraging further criminal activity. This aligns with broader industry best practices discouraging ransom payments.

While no immediate risk to customers has been identified, the exposure of proprietary code could still pose long-term risks. Threat actors may analyze the code for vulnerabilities, hardcoded secrets, or exploitable logic that could be used in future attacks targeting Grafana deployments or integrations.

The incident underscores the critical importance of securing access tokens, enforcing strict credential management policies, and monitoring access to code repositories. As organizations increasingly rely on cloud-based development platforms like GitHub, compromised credentials remain a leading attack vector.

Grafana Labs stated that it will release additional details after completing its post-incident review. The cybersecurity community will closely monitor further disclosures to gain insights into the attack vector and the defensive improvements implemented in response.
