Hackers Attempt to Breach U.S. Election Commission Systems, Triggering Major Service Outage

Hackers targeted the U.S. Federal Election Commission’s systems, forcing the agency to shut down online services and disrupting campaign finance filings just days before the November 3 midterm elections. The outage delayed fresh spending disclosures, but officials have not confirmed a successful breach or data theft.

According to Reuters, an FEC electronic filings officer warned campaign compliance firms about the attempted intrusion in an email sent Monday night. “We have a bad actor attempting to breach FEC systems. As a result, we’ve had to shut down our web-facing services temporarily,” the officer wrote.

The electronic filing service became unavailable around 10 p.m. Eastern Time on October 26. The FEC confirmed that its IT staff were working to restore access. Previously submitted campaign finance reports remained searchable, meaning the disruption affected new submissions rather than all public access to commission records.

The FEC’s official status page recorded several investigation updates before an October 27 notice at 8:17 p.m. Eastern Time stated that the issue had been identified and a fix was being implemented. The incident remained listed as unresolved in the status information reviewed for this report.

That distinction matters technically. Available evidence describes a protective shutdown after an attempted intrusion, not proof that hackers turned off the service. Authorities have not publicly identified an entry point, exploited software flaw, malware family, or attacker. No published findings establish whether anyone accessed or removed sensitive information.

The immediate impact falls on political organizations that need to submit time-sensitive reports. The outage blocked electronic filing of 24-hour and 48-hour spending disclosures, which help journalists, watchdogs, and voters follow money flowing into individual races during the campaign’s final days.

The timing adds pressure. Reuters reported that super PACs and dark money groups spent more than $50 million on average each day during the preceding week, citing OpenSecrets research director Brendan Glavin. More than $250 million in spending was reported on October 20 alone. Delayed filings therefore leave a significant gap in public oversight.

However, the FEC oversees campaign finance, not election administration. The incident should not affect voters’ ability to cast ballots. The confirmed disruption concerns financial reporting, not voting machines, ballot counting, or polling operations.

Government service shutdowns can accompany security investigations. In a separate case covered by GBHackers, Oxford City Council took systems offline after a cyberattack while specialists checked its network. That incident involved confirmed unauthorized access, a finding not publicly established in the FEC case.

GBHackers has also covered foreign influence activity targeting U.S. elections. That wider threat background does not identify who targeted the FEC. No public evidence currently links this attempted intrusion to a named government, criminal group, or earlier campaign.

Until investigators release technical findings, the clearest confirmed consequence remains delayed campaign finance reporting during a critical election period, rather than a demonstrated compromise of voting infrastructure or records.
