Hackers Breach ILSpy WordPress Domain to Deliver Malware

The official WordPress website for ILSpy, a highly popular open-source tool used by software developers to examine .NET code, has been compromised.

Hackers successfully breached the site to redirect visitors and deliver malware, turning a trusted developer resource into a dangerous trap.

The Redirection Attack

Cybersecurity research group vx-underground confirmed the breach after receiving video evidence from a security researcher known as “RootSuccess.” The attack reportedly started around 1:22 AM EST.

Under normal circumstances, clicking the download link on the ILSpy website sends users directly to the project’s official GitHub repository to get the clean, legitimate software.

However, during the breach, hackers altered the website’s behavior. Visitors who tried to download the tool were instead redirected to a malicious third-party domain.

Once on this fake page, users were greeted with a deceptive prompt. The site claimed that they needed to install a new browser extension to continue their download.

This is a classic social engineering tactic. Fake browser extensions are highly dangerous because they can silently steal passwords, capture login cookies, monitor web browsing habits, or download more severe malware in the background.

Attacks like this are particularly concerning because they target software developers. Developers often have elevated access to corporate networks, private source code, and company infrastructure.

If a hacker successfully compromises a developer’s machine through a fake extension, it can lead to massive data breaches or further supply chain attacks against the developer’s employer.

Currently, the main ILSpy WordPress domain is completely offline. Anyone trying to visit the website will see a “502 Bad Gateway” error.

This indicates that the server is not communicating properly, which likely means the administrators intentionally pulled the website offline to stop the malware spread, investigate the intrusion, and clean the compromised servers.

Security teams are advising all developers who recently visited the ILSpy website to check their systems.

If you attempted to download the software recently and installed any unexpected browser extensions, you should remove them immediately, change your passwords, and run a thorough security scan.

Until the official website is confirmed secure, users should bypass the main site and download ILSpy directly from its official GitHub repository.

Always remain cautious if a website suddenly demands a browser extension to download a standard file.
