Hackers Stole 1,000 North Korean Defectors Personal Data

A recent hack reveals that personal data of 1,000 North Koreans who defected and resettled in South Korea were Steal.

According to the source following are the personal details revealed that includes names, home addresses, and birthdays of 997 defectors were stolen sometime in the November.

Unification Ministry said this is the first time that personal details including names and addresses of North Korean defectors have been stolen.

Attacker infected the computer using malicious code via mail and the employee opened a mail at the Hana Centre in the North Gyeongsang Province.

About 30,000 North Koreans have fled to South Korea, mostly traveling via China, since the end of the 1950-53 Korean War.

After this incident, authorities conducted an emergency inspection of all computers at Hana Centres but no other leaks were found.

According to nypost, The ministry said it has found no further signs of hacking attacks or data breaches after investigating Hana’s offices around the country earlier this week. Hana runs 25 offices nationwide to provide assistance to North Korean defectors who resettle in the South.

The ministry said in a statement. “We apologize to defectors from the North. We will make utmost efforts to protect their personal information and prevent any recurrence of such an incident”.
