Higham Lane School Shuts Down After Disruptive Cyberattack

Higham Lane School in Nuneaton has closed its doors for a second consecutive day following a severe cyberattack that has disrupted the institution’s digital infrastructure.

The school announced on Monday, January 5, that it would remain closed through Tuesday, January 6, as external cybersecurity experts investigate and resolve the incident.

Emergency Response and Expert Assistance

Headteacher Michael Gannon confirmed that the decision to close the school was made after consulting with external security specialists.

The Department for Education’s Cyber Incident Response Team has been deployed to assist with the investigation, working alongside IT experts from the Central England Academy Trust to assess the full scope of the breach.

As a precautionary measure, all students and staff have been instructed not to access any school systems, including Google Classroom and SharePoint, until the network is confirmed to be secure.

School officials emphasized that students who previously logged into school systems should not be concerned but must avoid further access while investigations continue.

Despite the closure, school leadership has encouraged students to continue independent study using external learning platforms that are not connected to the school network.

Year 11 and Year 13 students preparing for GCSE and A-Level examinations have been urged to use this time to revise and consolidate their learning notes.

The school has recommended several safe alternatives for remote learning, including BBC Bitesize and Oak National Academy, which offer comprehensive lessons and revision materials accessible from personal devices without requiring school login credentials.

Additionally, the school’s examination and revision resources page remains available and has been confirmed safe for student access.

School administrators have committed to providing regular updates to parents, carers, and students as the investigation progresses.

The incident highlights the growing vulnerability of educational institutions to cyber threats and the critical importance of robust digital security measures in protecting student and staff data.

The school has not disclosed the specific nature of the attack or whether any data was compromised.
