The concept of artificial intelligence was first introduced in 1956. At that time, the few people who were lucky enough to even hear the term imagined it as something bizarre and supernatural.
Martian-think, perhaps? Or something even spookier?
Sixty-eight years later, there is hardly a soul on the planet who doesn’t come across AI on a regular basis.
And while it is becoming an accepted part of everyday life for many, the supernatural notion still hovers over everything that AI touches. It is at the same time both profoundly real and extremely surreal.
The question many people are now asking is: How far can it go? With everything from AI anime chat for people looking for companionship to once-unimaginable medical breakthroughs, AI is poised to fundamentally change the world we live in.
Before we get into a detailed discussion about the future, it is worthwhile to step back for a moment and take a look at where things currently stand. Just where exactly are we in the AI movement?
There are several observations that we can definitively make at this point:
We could go on and on. In short, AI is giving us the freedom to think in whole new directions as it takes care of much of our previously daily drudgery for us.
Amazingly, this is all really just the beginning of what will surely be a long and incredible growth path for AI.
The big question on researchers’ minds now is when AI will actually surpass human-level cognitive function in sophistication.
The date that many are currently estimating is 2059. But what exactly will this transformation entail?
A pivotal concept in the AI development narrative is Singularity. This will come about at the point when AI fully surpasses human intelligence levels and actually becomes self-improving.
Singularity holds both positive and negative potential:
Another major component of the AI evolution is the sweeping changes that will take place in terms of human-institutional interaction.
The implications are far too numerous to mention here, but we can point to a few.
Large-scale institutions, including government offices, nonprofits and for-profit businesses, and other types of institutions will not deal with people remotely the same way that they do now.
Because AI will enable institutions to take care of so much of their work automatically, we will no longer think of bureaucratic or commercial dealings as time-consuming.
What were once extended processes will simply be a matter of pushing buttons.
The use of AI at the corporate level will essentially become mandatory. Because of AI’s ability to handle information at lightning speed, any corporation that does not adopt its usage will quickly find itself out of the competition.
The ability to increase shareholder value at pace with other companies will determine whether a given corporation stays in the race or not.
If shareholders see that a company is failing to get on board, they will start backing out in large numbers.
Another major concern that people have about the future of AI is the potential elimination of privacy.
This is already starting to happen, and we can see it in places like retail where computers make suggestions for us that we ourselves didn’t realize we would likely make.
AI-driven writing assistants can finish our sentences in precisely the way that we would on an individual level.
These tendencies will start to snowball, and the data that AI is able to gather about us will reach frightening levels.
What we really want to know is whether we will be able to preserve the positive things that AI has to offer and yet tempter the potentially scary parts. The answer to this question is up to us.
Governments need to do their part to establish and enforce regulations. Institutions have a responsibility to follow ethical practices and not become complacent when things start to go awry.
And researchers must remain vigilant in the ethics of their studies. With the right combination of efforts, we should be able to maintain a balance that will keep us moving forward steadily without spiralling out of control.
