Kali Unkaputtbar – A new Boot Menu to Boot Directly into Snapshots

A new feature has been introduced recently for Kali Linux by Offensive Security, dubbed as Kali Unkaputtbar. This newly added feature offers the users of Kali Linux a new menu to boot directly into snapshots.

This new feature is available on all Kali Linux 2022.1 and on the later systems that by default utilize the Btrfs file system.

Here’s what the Offensive Security stated:-

“Have you ever wished you could travel back in time after deleting that important customer report or after installing a broken driver (Nvidia?) just before heading into a board meeting? Well, you better read on because now you can.”

Kali Unkaputtbar is a new feature that enables users to bring the snapshot feature of the virtual machines to the bare metal, and in some specific troublesome situations, this new feature could be very useful and make your system more buff by injecting some steroids.

Capabilities of Kali Unkaputtbar

After installing the Kali Linux version 2022.1 or newer system with btrfs as the file system you have to enable the snapshotting option. Once done now with the help of snapper Btrfs snapshots manager of openSUSE, it performs the following tasks that we have mentioned below:-

  • Automatic snapshots with APT installations or removals.
  • Automatic snapshots on every boot.
  • Automatically created Kali Linux specific btrfs subvolume layout.
  • The new boot menu allows you to boot into snapshots.
  • Ability to browse the file content of snapshots and copy files across.
  • Perform diffs between snapshots and restore individual files.
  • Adds a new boot menu in the GRUB bootloader.

Moreover, if you want to see how it works, then don’t worry, as in the below video you can see it in action:-

Here below we have mentioned all the key features of Unkaputtbar:-

  • Boot snapshot
  • Diff snapshots
  • Browse snapshots
  • Additional automatic snapshots

Install Unkaputtbar

If you want to install and use the new Unkaputtbar, then you have to download the latest Kali Linux image (Kali 2022.1) from the official page of Kali Linux, and after that, you have to enable the automatic snapshots option.

While regarding the btrfs file system and triggering the Unkaputtbar snapshot feature, the developers of Offensive Security have also provided extensive and dedicated documentation.
