Landmark Admin Suffers Major Breach, Exposing Data of 1.6M+ Users

Landmark Admin, LLC (“Landmark”), a Texas-based third-party administrator for life insurance carriers, has confirmed that a cyberattack compromised sensitive personal data belonging to more than 1.6 million individuals.

The breach, detected in mid-May 2024, has prompted urgent calls for vigilance among affected policyholders, insurance producers, and beneficiaries.

Discovery and Immediate Response

According to an official notice released by Landmark, the first signs of suspicious activity were detected on May 13, 2024. By May 14, it was confirmed that an unauthorized third party had attempted to access the company’s network.

Landmark responded by disconnecting compromised systems and blocking remote access to its network.

The company swiftly engaged a specialized cybersecurity firm and additional IT staff to conduct a thorough forensic investigation and to secure its digital environment.

Preliminary findings indicated that some files containing sensitive information had been accessed by the intruder.

While the complete scope of the breach is still under review, Landmark has begun notifying affected individuals and regulators as required by law.

The exposed information varies by individual, but may include:

• Full name and address
• Social Security number and tax identification number
• Driver’s license or state-issued ID number
• Passport number
• Financial account details
• Medical information and date of birth
• Health insurance policy numbers
• Life and annuity policy information

Given the scope of the data, victims face a heightened risk of identity theft, financial fraud, and other forms of exploitation.

Landmark has stated that data privacy and security remain its highest priorities.

“We are committed to doing everything we can to protect the privacy and security of the personal information in our care,” said Thomas A. Munson, President of Landmark Admin, in the official notice.

The firm has since enhanced its cybersecurity protocols and is offering assistance to those affected. A dedicated help line (1-844-428-5109) is available for the next 90 days, with representatives answering questions and providing guidance.

Landmark urges affected individuals to:

• Monitor account statements and credit reports for suspicious activity
• Consider placing fraud alerts and credit freezes with major credit bureaus
• Report suspected identity theft to local law enforcement and the Federal Trade Commission

The full scope of the breach and the identity of the threat actors remains under investigation.

Landmark says it will continue to inform affected parties as more information becomes available, expressing regret for any inconvenience and reaffirming its commitment to data security.
