Hackers compromised nearly two thousand Magento stores in the largest ever web skimming campaign that targets Magento stores. The previous record of several stores hacked in a day is 962, that attack happened in July last year.
The increase in a number of attacks indicates that attackers have automated the hacking operations, to compromise as many possible stores.
According to Sansec who reported the incident, the affected stores have no history of security incidents and it seems attackers using new attack methods to gain write access to all these stores.
Researchers also able to link the campaign with the new zero-day exploit dubbed Magento 1 that was put in the sale by attackers on hacking forums.
“User z3r0day announced on a hacking forum to sell a Magento 1 “remote code execution” exploit method, including instructional video, for $5000.”
Here is the post for the exploit in the dark web forum that translated from the Russian language
This attack compromises tens of thousands of customers associated with these online stores and their financial and personal information was stolen over the weekend. All the exfiltrated data are stored in the servers located in Russia.
According to Magento metrics, still, 95 thousand stores running with Magento 1 and this exploit work with all of these stores. Since Magento 1 is End-Of-Life – no official patches will be provided by Adobe to fix this bug.
Sansec investigation found that Attacker(s) used the IPs 92.242.62.210 (US) and 91.121.94.121 (OVH, FR) used to interact with the Magento admin panel and used the “Magento Connect” feature to download the malicious files to the store.
The malicious scripts get added to the prototype.js file and it captures the keystroke from the checkout page and exfiltrates data to a website hosted in Moscow.
