Microsoft Entra ID Flaw Enables Privilege Escalation to Global Admin

Security researchers have uncovered a critical vulnerability in Microsoft Entra ID that allows attackers to escalate privileges and gain Global Administrator access, potentially compromising entire organizational environments.

This flaw represents a significant security risk for enterprises relying on Microsoft’s cloud identity and access management platform.

Security Vulnerability Details

The discovered vulnerability in Microsoft Entra ID creates a pathway for threat actors to exploit authentication mechanisms and escalate their privileges within the directory service.

The flaw specifically targets the identity and access management (IAM) infrastructure, allowing unauthorized users to potentially gain Global Administrator privileges, which represent the highest level of access within an Entra ID tenant.

Security researchers have identified that this privilege escalation technique exploits weaknesses in the role-based access control (RBAC) system that governs permissions within Microsoft Entra ID environments.

The vulnerability enables attackers to bypass normal authentication and authorization controls, effectively circumventing the security boundaries that protect sensitive administrative functions.

Technical Exploitation Methods

The attack vector involves manipulating Azure Active Directory Graph API calls and exploiting inconsistencies in how the system validates user permissions during privilege elevation requests.

Attackers can leverage specific API endpoints to request elevated permissions that should normally require proper authentication and authorization workflows.

The exploitation process involves crafting malicious requests that target the Microsoft Graph API infrastructure, specifically focusing on endpoints responsible for managing user roles and permissions.

This technique allows threat actors to bypass traditional security controls and gain unauthorized access to administrative functions typically reserved for legitimate Global Administrators.

Organizations using Microsoft Entra ID for single sign-on (SSO), multi-factor authentication (MFA), and conditional access policies face significant exposure risks.

A successful privilege escalation attack could grant attackers comprehensive control over user accounts, security policies, and sensitive organizational data stored within the Microsoft 365 ecosystem.

The vulnerability affects tenant-wide configurations, potentially allowing attackers to modify security settings, create new administrative accounts, and access confidential information across all connected applications and services.

This level of access could enable threat actors to establish persistent backdoors and maintain long-term unauthorized access to corporate resources.

Organizations should immediately implement enhanced monitoring for unusual privilege escalation activities and review their current identity governance frameworks.

Security teams should establish robust audit logging mechanisms to detect unauthorized attempts to access administrative functions and implement additional verification steps for sensitive operations.

Microsoft has been notified of this vulnerability and organizations should prepare for forthcoming security updates.

In the interim, enterprises should strengthen their zero-trust architecture implementations and conduct comprehensive reviews of existing Global Administrator assignments to ensure proper access controls remain in place.
