Microsoft Outlook Flaw Lets Attackers Execute Malicious Code Remotely

Microsoft has disclosed a critical remote code execution vulnerability in Outlook that could allow attackers to execute malicious code on affected systems.

The vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2025-62562, was officially released on December 9, 2025, and poses a significant security risk to enterprise and personal users worldwide.

The flaw stems from a use-after-free weakness in Outlook’s code execution logic. Attackers can exploit this vulnerability by crafting specially designed email messages or attachments.

When a user opens or interacts with the malicious content, the vulnerability is triggered, allowing remote code execution with elevated privileges.

This means attackers could potentially gain complete control over the victim’s system, steal sensitive data, install malware, or establish persistent access for future attacks.

According to Microsoft’s vulnerability assessment, CVE-2025-62562 has a CVSS score of 7.8, indicating high severity.

The vulnerability requires local access and user interaction to exploit. However, the impact is severe as attackers can achieve complete system compromise.

The attack vector is regional, with low attack complexity and no elevated privileges required for the attacker.

Microsoft has classified this vulnerability as an Important priority and assigned it CVSS severity metrics reflecting its critical nature.

The weakness (CWE-416) involves improper memory management, specifically the use of freed memory references. This standard programming error leads to unpredictable behavior and security vulnerabilities.

Users are strongly advised to apply security updates immediately when Microsoft releases patches.

Organizations should prioritize patching Outlook installations across their infrastructure.

Until patches are available, consider implementing email security measures, such as disabling email preview functionality, restricting attachment types, and deploying advanced threat protection solutions to detect and block malicious email content.

This vulnerability underscores the ongoing importance of maintaining up-to-date software and implementing defense-in-depth security strategies to protect against evolving threats targeting widely used productivity applications such as Microsoft Outlook.
