Microsoft Teams to Introduce Deepfake Detection to Identify AI-Generated Audio and Video in Meetings

Microsoft Teams will support third-party detection of synthetic audio and video, allowing organizations to identify potentially AI-generated or manipulated media during meetings. Microsoft’s roadmap indicates this new capability is in development and scheduled to roll out in November 2026.

Under Roadmap ID 573451, this feature will integrate detection signals from certified third-party providers directly into Teams meeting experiences. These external providers will analyze synthetic media, not Teams itself.

Microsoft Teams Introduce Deepfake Detection

The planned capability separates media analysis from the collaboration platform’s response. Supported third-party solutions will analyze meeting audio and video for indications of synthetic generation or manipulation and then send detection signals to Microsoft Teams.

Teams will facilitate the platform integration and the in-meeting experiences, enabling organizations to access and act on these signals. This clarification is crucial: the announcement describes an integration framework rather than a Microsoft-developed deepfake detection engine operating independently within Teams.

The roadmap does not list the certified providers or describe their detection methods. It also does not specify confidence thresholds, supported manipulation techniques, analysis latency, or how detection results will be presented to meeting participants.

For security teams, these implementation details will significantly influence the capability’s utility in real-world settings. A detection signal could aid in investigations or interventions; however, the roadmap does not guarantee that every flagged participant or media stream indicates malicious activity.

The integration’s security benefits center on incorporating synthetic media detection into the meeting environment. This lets organizations respond without treating detection as a separate workflow.

However, the announcement does not clarify the specific controls that will be in place. Microsoft has not provided details on whether the supported experiences will include participant warnings, administrator notifications, automated restrictions, or other enforcement measures.

Therefore, organizations should differentiate between the ability to surface and act on signals and any particular response mechanisms.

Deployment planning must also address how providers access and process meeting media. The roadmap does not cover data retention, processing locations, consent requirements, licensing, or administrative configuration. These remain important considerations rather than established feature characteristics.

View detection as an analytical signal, not a guarantee of authenticity. The roadmap lacks accuracy measurements or information regarding false positives and false negatives.

Microsoft indicates that this feature will support Desktop, Mac, and Web platforms. The cloud scope is categorized as Worldwide Standard Multi-Tenant, with General Availability and Targeted Release phases outlined.

The roadmap entry was added on October 2, 2026, and last modified on October 7, 2026. November marks the planned start of the rollout. However, it is not a confirmed date for when every eligible organization will receive the capability. No mobile availability has been specified.
