OpenVPN has released a critical security update for its macOS client after researchers uncovered a vulnerability that could allow remote command execution on affected systems.
The issue, tracked as CVE-2026-9560, impacts the privileged helper component in OpenVPN Connect and has been fixed in version 3.8.2 (build 6009), released on May 25, 2026.
The vulnerability was responsibly disclosed by security researchers Ismael Esquilichi, Pablo Redondo, and Lê Đức Ninh. The flaw exists in the macOS privileged helper component that executes operations requiring elevated permissions.
Due to improper input validation in this component, attackers could inject malicious commands and execute them with elevated privileges, posing a high risk to both enterprise and individual users.
If successfully exploited, the vulnerability could allow attackers to gain unauthorized control over affected systems. This includes the ability to execute arbitrary commands, access sensitive data, manipulate VPN configurations, and establish persistence mechanisms.
While there are no confirmed reports of active exploitation at the time of disclosure, the potential impact makes it a serious concern, particularly in environments where VPN clients are widely deployed.
OpenVPN addressed the issue in version 3.8.2 (6009), which includes a fix for CVE-2026-9560. In addition to the security patch, the update resolves several functional issues.
These include fixing a bug where server URLs ending with special characters such as “/”, “?”, or “#” prevented the application from launching a browser for authentication, as well as correcting a problem in the manual profile import feature that could cause blank profiles or application crashes.
To ensure the integrity of the downloaded software, OpenVPN has provided a SHA-256 checksum for verification.
The official installer file, openvpn-connect-3.8.2.6009_signed.dmg, has a checksum value of 8d50036510859956d20d1f50e43171be53417431104c6befb1352ff5187c248a. Users are strongly encouraged to verify this checksum before installation to mitigate the risks of tampered or malicious files.
Security experts recommend that users immediately update to the latest version of OpenVPN Connect to mitigate the risk posed by this vulnerability. Organizations should prioritize patch deployment across macOS endpoints, enforce least-privilege access controls, and monitor systems for any unusual activity.
This incident underscores the importance of regularly updating security tools and carefully monitoring privileged components, which remain a critical attack surface even in widely trusted applications.
