Hackers Massively Scanning for SAP Recon Vulnerability

Last Week SAP releases updates to fix critical security vulnerability found in the SAP NetWeaver AS JAVA (LM Configuration Wizard) versions 7.30 to 7.50.

The vulnerability can be tracked as CVE-2020-6287 and it is rated with a maximum CVSS score of 10 out of 10.

The RECON vulnerability (short for Remotely Exploitable Code On NetWeaver) is due to a lack of authentication in a web component of the SAP NetWeaver AS for Java that allows high-privileged activities on the vulnerable SAP system.

Scan for Recon Vulnerability

Now attackers massively scanning the Internet for the SAP systems affected with the vulnerability(CVE-2020-6287).

Also, a researcher published a proof-of-concept (POC) exploit for the RECON vulnerability, the script allows users to check for the missing authorization check vulnerability.

It includes a PoC script that exploits directory traversal in the query Protocol method. To note the PoC doesn’t provide RCE/user creation functionality.

Onapsis warned that more than 40,000 SAP customers and at least 2,500 vulnerable systems exposed online. The vulnerability present by default with all SAP applications running on top of SAP NetWeaver AS Java 7.3 and any newer versions (up to SAP NetWeaver 7.5).

CISA urged organizations to patch or mitigate the vulnerability with Internet-facing systems, following that Internal systems are also recommended to patch.
