Multiple SonicWall Vulnerabilities Resulted in a Firewall Crash

Multiple vulnerabilities were detected in the SonicOS Management web interface and the SSLVPN portal, resulting in a firewall crash.

In a security alert that was just released by SonicWall, 9 vulnerabilities were patched. Organizations utilizing older SonicOS firmware releases are highly encouraged by SonicWall to update to the most recent firmware updates.

SonicWall Vulnerabilities 

The post-authentication stack-based buffer overflow vulnerability, identified as CVE-2023-39276, has a CVSS score of 7.7. A flaw in the getBookmarkList.json URL endpoint causes a firewall crash.

The vulnerability was identified as CVE-2023-39277, with a CVSS score of 7.7.  Post-authentication Stack-Based Buffer Overflow Vulnerability in the sonicflow.csv. and appflowsessions.csv endpoints cause a firewall crash.

Following that is the bug identified as CVE-2023-39278, with a CVSS Score of 7.7; post-authentication user assertion failure leads to Stack-Based Buffer Overflow vulnerability via main.cgi, resulting in a firewall crash.

CVE-2023-39279, Post-Authentication Stack-Based Buffer Overflow, has a CVSS score of 7.7. A vulnerability in the getPacketReplayData.json URL endpoint causes a firewall crash.

The bug identified as CVE-2023-39280, which has a CVSS score of 7.7, the Post-authentication Stack-Based Buffer Overflow Vulnerability in the ssoStats-s.xml, ssoStats-s.wri endpoints cause the firewall to crash.

The Post-authentication Stack-Based Buffer Overflow bug CVE-2023-41711 has a CVSS score of 7.7. A vulnerability in the sonicwall.exp and prefs.exp endpoints cause the firewall to crash.

This vulnerability is designated as CVE-2023-41712 and has a CVSS score of 7.7 is a Stack-Based Buffer Overflow Vulnerability in the SSL VPN’s plainprefs.exp URL endpoint results in the firewall crash.

The vulnerability is tagged as CVE-2023-41713 with a CVSS Score of 4.3 and is a Use of Hard-coded Password in the ‘dynHandleBuyToolbar’ demo function.

The post-authentication Improper Privilege Management vulnerability in the SonicOS SSL VPN Tunnel, identified as CVE-2023-41715 with a CVSS Score of 6.4, allows users to escalate their privileges inside the tunnel.

Affected Products

“The vulnerabilities mentioned have no impact on SonicWall SSLVPN SMA100 and SMA1000 series products. Additionally, there is no substantiated evidence to suggest that these vulnerabilities are currently being actively exploited in real-world scenarios”, the company said in its advisory.

Fixes Available

SonicWall PSIRT advises administrators to only allow trusted sources access to the SSLVPN portal and SonicOS management until the updates are implemented. Multi-factor authentication is also advised.
