Stellantis Confirms Data Breach Affecting Citroën, Fiat, Jeep, and More

Automotive giant Stellantis has confirmed a significant data breach affecting its North American customer service operations, potentially impacting customers across its portfolio of brands including Citroën, Fiat, Jeep, Chrysler, and other subsidiaries.

The company detected unauthorized access to a third-party service provider’s platform that supports its customer service infrastructure.

Limited Data Exposure Reported

The breach, which Stellantis discovered recently, exposed basic contact information of customers but did not compromise financial details or sensitive personal data, according to the company’s official statement released Sunday.

While the automaker has not disclosed the exact number of affected customers, the incident appears to be contained to fundamental contact details rather than more critical information.

Stellantis immediately activated its incident response protocols upon discovering the unauthorized access.

The company is directly notifying all affected customers and has reported the incident to relevant authorities.

As a precautionary measure, Stellantis is urging customers to remain vigilant against potential phishing attempts that cybercriminals might launch using the compromised contact information.

This breach adds to a concerning trend of cybersecurity incidents targeting the automotive industry.

Recent months have witnessed a surge in cyber attacks against automakers worldwide, as increasingly sophisticated threat actors target vehicle manufacturers’ digital infrastructure.

These attacks often disrupt operations and compromise sensitive customer and corporate data.

The automotive sector has become particularly attractive to cybercriminals due to the industry’s digital transformation and the vast amounts of personal data collected through connected vehicle services, customer portals, and service platforms.

Modern vehicles and their supporting infrastructure present multiple attack vectors that malicious actors can exploit.

Earlier this month, British luxury carmaker Jaguar Land Rover experienced severe operational disruption following a cybersecurity incident that forced factory shutdowns until September 24.

This demonstrates the potentially devastating operational impact such breaches can have on automotive manufacturers beyond just data exposure.

The timing of these incidents highlights the urgent need for enhanced cybersecurity measures across the automotive industry.

As vehicles become increasingly connected and manufacturers expand their digital service offerings, the attack surface for potential cyber threats continues to grow.

Stellantis customers should monitor their communications for any suspicious activity and report potential phishing attempts to the company immediately.

The investigation into this breach remains ongoing, and additional details may emerge as authorities and the company continue their analysis of the incident’s scope and impact.
