Summit – New Most Powerful & Fastest Supercomputer on the Planet Designed by IBM

New World’s fastest and powerful Supercomputer “Summit” designed by IBM & NVIDIA  which is twice bigger and faster than a current biggest supercomputer Sunway TaihuLight.

Now Sunway TaihuLight replaced by Summit and it will initial uses will include areas of astrophysics, cancer research and systems biology.

Summit currently located and begins work in the and Lawrence Livermore national laboratories U.S Department of Energy, worth a total of $325 million.

Most Powerful Supercomputer that Ever Designed

Summit is much bigger than we are thinking, This means it is more than 1 million times more powerful than the fastest I7 laptops.

IBM Designed a system with the brawn of 200 petaflops, or quadrillion operations per second, and the brains of AI and deep learning. with 4 years of continuous development.

This Monster Summit allowing it to sift through thousands and thousands of variables and create models and simulations that help to solve worlds most complex problems.

Summit can process 200,000 trillion calculations per second – or 200 petaflops which is twice faster than Previous record-holder Sunway TaihuLight has a processing power of 93 petaflops.

Also, It has 4,608 computer servers Summit’s file system can store 250 petabytes of data, or the equivalent of 74 years of high-definition video.

At over 340 tons, Summit’s cabinets, file system, and overhead infrastructure weigh more than a large commercial aircraft.

According to Oak Ridge Lab, Summit is America’s most powerful supercomputer is a machine for scientific discovery.

Collaboration of IBM and NVIDIA for Summit

Summit (and its sister machine, Sierra, at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory) represent a major shift from how IBM structured previous systems.

NVIDIA’s GPUs are in 17 of the top 100 supercomputers in the world, and that number will likely grow as GPUs become more common in supercomputing.

IBM developed a new computing architecture that combines high-performance POWER9 CPUs with AI-optimized GPUs from our partner NVIDIA.

It using six NVIDIA Tensor Core GPUs and two IBM POWER9 chips per node. Each node also features 1.6 terabytes of memory.

According to NVIDIA, It already has a packed schedule, lending its power to projects in several interesting research areas: cancer research, fusion energy, and disease and addiction, to name a few. It is exciting to think about the potential here, putting the most powerful Artificial Intelligence supercomputer ever built to work on some of humanity’s biggest unanswered questions.
