Symantec Diagnostic Tool Flaw Enables Unauthorized Privilege Escalation

Symantec, a division of Broadcom, has released a critical security update to address a high-severity vulnerability identified in its Symantec Diagnostic Tool (SymDiag).

This vulnerability tracked as CVE-2025-0893, could enable unauthorized privilege escalation, posing significant security risks.

The issue specifically affects systems where SymDiag is used in conjunction with the WSS Agent. No other product combinations are impacted.

CVE-2025-0893: Details and Impact

The vulnerability, rated with a CVSS base score of 7.8 (High), allows attackers to exploit the software to gain elevated access to sensitive resources typically protected from unauthorized users or applications.

The issue stems from improper privilege handling in versions of SymDiag before 3.0.79.

If successfully exploited, this flaw could compromise confidentiality, integrity, and availability, potentially leading to severe consequences for affected systems.

The National Vulnerability Database (NVD) categorizes CVE-2025-0893 as a privilege escalation vulnerability with the following technical parameters:

  • Severity/CVSSv3: High / 7.8 AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H
  • Impact: Unauthorized privilege escalation

Symantec has taken swift action to mitigate this issue. SymDiag version 3.0.79 has been released and is automatically downloaded upon launch for affected systems.

Older versions of the tool have been purged from all impacted agents, ensuring that no manual action is required by users or administrators.

To further reduce the risk of exploitation, Symantec advises users to adopt the following best practices:

  • Restrict administrative or management system access to authorized privileged users only.
  • Limit remote access to trusted and authorized systems.
  • Operate under the principle of least privilege to minimize potential impacts.
  • Regularly update operating systems and applications with vendor patches.
  • Employ a multi-layered security approach by using firewalls and anti-malware solutions.
  • Deploy network and host-based intrusion detection systems to monitor for anomalous or suspicious activity.

These measures can help organizations bolster their defenses against potential attacks exploiting CVE-2025-0893 or other latent vulnerabilities.

Symantec credits Ary Dobrovolskiy for identifying and reporting CVE-2025-0893, contributing to the resolution of this critical issue.

This update underscores the importance of maintaining up-to-date software and adhering to robust security practices.

Organizations using Symantec Diagnostic Tool in combination with the WSS Agent should ensure that their systems are running SymDiag version 3.0.79 or later to protect against this high-severity vulnerability.
