The Tor Project has announced the official release of Tor Browser 14.5.1, introducing a host of security improvements and new features designed to bolster privacy and ease of use for millions around the globe.

The new version is now available on the Tor Browser download page and through the Tor distribution directory.

Key Security Updates

Tor Browser 14.5.1 focuses heavily on security, addressing several vulnerabilities inherited from its core engine, Mozilla Firefox.

The most notable security enhancement is rebasing the browser onto Firefox 128.10.0esr, which ensures that all critical patches and security fixes are up to date.

Additionally, the browser incorporates backported security fixes from the more recent Firefox 138 update, further tightening defenses against emerging threats.

One of the pivotal anti-censorship measures in this release is the update of the anti-censorship.gpg keyring with the latest public key from contributor ‘shelikhoo,’ reinforcing the integrity of tools designed to circumvent internet restrictions.

The update brings a unified experience across Windows, macOS, and Linux by setting new tabs to default to the Tor Browser Home (about:tor) on desktop, streamlining the user journey and enhancing privacy from the very first click.

The developers have also squashed a pesky bug that caused incorrect initial letterbox sizes when the interface font size was set to 13px, ensuring a consistent and predictable window size for stronger fingerprinting resistance.

For Android users, the browser receives an upgrade to GeckoView 128.10.0esr, aligning it with the desktop version’s security baseline and improving stability and performance.

The build system sees improvements as well, with a new mechanism to skip update responses for versions without incremental or full update files.

This change is designed to streamline the update process and reduce potential errors during upgrades. The Tor Project is actively seeking feedback on this release.

Users who encounter bugs or have suggestions for future enhancements are encouraged to share their thoughts, contributing to the ongoing mission of making private and censorship-resistant browsing accessible to all.

Changelog at a Glance

  • Firefox updated to 128.10.0esr for desktop and GeckoView for Android
  • Security fixes backported from Firefox 138
  • Anti-censorship keyring updated
