Hackers Accessed Direct Message Inbox of 36 High-profile Twitter Accounts

Last week several high-profile Twitter accounts hacked including Biden, billionaires, and corporate accounts hacked in Bitcoin scam.

The high-profile accounts were hijacked in a quick rapid session and message posted to trick the users sending payments to a BTC address and in return, the attacker said that they would be sending doubling the payments.

The following are the high-profile Twitter accounts compromised; Apple, Uber, former President Barack Obama, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, hip-hop mogul Kanye West, and former New York City mayor, billionaire Mike Bloomberg, Cameron, Tyler Winklevoss, and many others.

Hackers Accessed Internal Admin Tool

According to the Motherboard report following the hack of the high-profile Twitter account, the attackers gained access to an Internal Twitter user admin tool used by employees of Twitter.

In an update, Twitter said that it was a result of the coordinated social engineering attack targeted a twitter employee who had access to internal systems and tools. Also, they are checking for other malicious activities with the accounts.

After the detailed investigation, twitter said that hackers downloaded the data from 8 of the compromised and for 45 accounts they were able to initiate a password reset request.

Twitter said that the attacker compromised only a small number of employees and used their credentials to access Twitter’s internal tools, even they were successfully bypassed the 2-factor authentication.

In a recent update the company said that the attackers accessed the DM inbox of 39 high-profile accounts, “To date, we do not indicate that any other former or current elected official had their DMs accessed.”

The company said that “we are actively working on communicating directly with the account-holders that were impacted.”

The Twitter hack in an eye-opening cybersecurity breach for the social media platforms as well as their users. The attack seems well-prepared and sophisticated.
