Windows Notepad and Paint Get AI Boost in Latest Update to Improve User Experience

Microsoft has rolled out significant updates to its native Notepad and Paint applications for Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels on Windows 11.

Both applications now integrate artificial intelligence capabilities alongside enhanced user interface improvements, marking Microsoft’s continued push toward AI-integrated productivity tools.

Notepad Version 11.2512.10.0: Markdown Expansion and Streaming AI Features

The latest Notepad update introduces three primary enhancements. First, the application now supports expanded Markdown syntax, including strikethrough formatting and nested lists.

Users can access these features through the formatting toolbar, keyboard shortcuts, or direct Markdown syntax editing, providing flexibility for both casual users and power users.

Second, Notepad now includes a redesigned welcome experience intended to help users discover new features.

The dialog provides an overview of Notepad’s capabilities and serves as an onboarding mechanism for both new and returning users.

Users can dismiss this dialog and revisit it later through the megaphone icon in the top-right toolbar.

Most significantly, Microsoft has expanded streaming support for AI text generation features.

The Write, Rewrite, and Summarize functions now display results incrementally as they generate whether processed locally or in the cloud allowing users to view partial results before full completion.

This improvement reduces perceived latency and enables users to interact with preview content sooner. All AI text features require Microsoft account authentication.

Paint Version 11.2512.191.0: Coloring Book Generator and Fill Tool Enhancement

Paint receives two notable additions in this release. The Coloring Book feature, an AI-powered generator available exclusively on Copilot+ PCs, allows users to create coloring pages from text prompts.

Users enter descriptive text such as “a cute fluffy cat on a donut” and Paint generates unique coloring book pages for download, copying, or canvas integration. This feature requires Microsoft account sign-in.

The second enhancement introduces a fill tolerance slider, granting users precise control over the Fill tool’s color application.

The slider enables adjustment of tolerance levels to achieve either clean fills or creative effects, with visual feedback showing the difference between various tolerance settings.

Both applications require Microsoft account authentication for AI-powered features, linking user activity to Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure.

The Coloring Book feature’s hardware requirement Copilot+ PC exclusivity reflects Microsoft’s strategy of consolidating advanced AI features with specific hardware configurations, potentially limiting feature availability across diverse enterprise environments.

Microsoft encourages community feedback through the Feedback Hub (WIN + F), with dedicated sections for both applications.

This feedback-driven development approach indicates ongoing refinement of these AI integrations based on user interaction patterns and security considerations.

The updates represent Microsoft’s broader strategy of embedding AI assistants into core Windows applications, transforming native tools from basic utilities into AI-augmented productivity platforms.

Organizations should evaluate these features’ data handling practices and authentication requirements before deployment in sensitive environments.
