WordPress Plugin Vulnerability Enables Admin Takeover via Auth Bypass

A newly disclosed vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2026-1492, has been identified in the User Registration & Membership plugin for WordPress, exposing websites to critical authentication bypass and privilege escalation risks.

Affecting versions up to 5.1.2, the vulnerability allows remote attackers to gain full administrative access without valid credentials.

The affected plugin, widely used to manage user registration and membership access, contains a serious design vulnerability in handling trust between frontend and backend components.

This vulnerability arises from improper validation of user-controlled input and weak enforcement of authorization checks in AJAX-based membership workflows.

Instead of attacking login forms directly, threat actors can interact with legitimate functionalities such as membership registration to trigger backend actions that create authenticated sessions.

Once exploited, attackers gain full administrative control over the WordPress instance, enabling complete compromise of the system.

Technical Details

CVE-2026-1492 is caused by insecure server-side logic that trusts parameters received from client-side scripts.

AttributeDetail
CVE IDCVE-2026-1492
Published DateMarch 3, 2026
Vulnerability TypeAuthentication Bypass / Privilege Escalation
Attack VectorRemote (HTTP / AJAX)
Privileges RequiredNone
User InteractionNone
CVSS V4.0 Score9.8 – Critical
CWECWE-269 – Improper Privilege Management
Vulnerable ComponentMembership Registration / AJAX Endpoint
Exploit AvailabilityPublic

By manipulating role parameters or membership actions, the attacker can force the system to assign administrative privileges during registration.

The plugin neglects to check whether the user is authorized to perform these actions, resulting in an authentication bypass.

These parameters include nonce values exposed in public JavaScript files. Since the backend fails to verify them properly, unauthenticated users can reuse these values to send crafted requests to the WordPress AJAX endpoint (/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php).

Authentication Validation (Source : CYFIRMA).

This exploitation method doesn’t rely on guessing passwords or stealing credentials it abuses legitimate application behaviors, making detection notably difficult.

A successful attack leads to a complete administrative takeover, enabling threat actors to:

  • Modify website settings, install malicious plugins, or inject code (potential remote code execution).
  • Access sensitive data, including credentials and configuration details.
  • Create hidden admin accounts or persistence mechanisms.
  • Deface the website or redirect users to phishing and malware pages.
Privilege Escalation (Source : CYFIRMA).

The vulnerability carries a CVSS v4 score of 9.8 (Critical) and is classified under CWE-269: Improper Privilege Management. Exploit scripts are now publicly available, increasing the risk of mass exploitation.

Affected Versions and Fix

All versions of the plugin ≤ 5.1.2 are vulnerable. The developer released version 5.1.3, which implements stricter validation, improved authorization checks, and nonce handling fixes.

Initial Access Brokers (IABs) may leverage this vulnerability to obtain administrative access to WordPress instances and resell access for downstream activities.

UNDERGROUND AND DARK WEB FORUMS (Source : CYFIRMA).

Users should update immediately and monitor for signs of exploitation, such as abnormal AJAX requests or unexpected account privilege elevations.

Researchers observed exploitation interest across underground forums, with attackers discussing automated tools for scanning and compromising WordPress sites.

Exposed deployments have been identified worldwide, notably in North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific, affecting e-commerce, education, and media sectors.

CVE-2026-1492 shows how weak validation and misplaced trust between frontend and backend components can completely undermine WordPress security.

Given its ease of exploitation and severe impact, administrators must patch affected systems and strengthen monitoring across membership-related workflows to reduce risk.
