Apple-focused scam operations are increasingly using FaceTime as a high-trust social-engineering channel to steal credentials and, in higher-risk cases, prepare victims for device compromise.
Apple said threat actors may approach targets via phone calls, FaceTime, SMS, email, and other communications, posing as a legitimate organization.
The company stressed that users should never disclose passwords, verification codes, card details, or other sensitive information during unsolicited contact.
Recent reports describe criminals placing unsolicited FaceTime calls that display names such as “Apple Support” or imitate a victim’s bank.
Attackers often pair the call with convincing messages styled as account alerts or refund notifications.
According to a report on the scam activity, the objective is to push users into responding before they have time to verify the request independently.
Once a target engages, the fraudster claims that their Apple ID, banking account, or device has been compromised. The operator then pressures the victim to “verify” information by supplying card details, online banking credentials, Apple ID passwords, or multi-factor authentication codes.
In some incidents, victims are instructed to install remote-access software, enabling an attacker to observe the screen, guide account recovery actions, or take control of sessions on linked systems.
Malwarebytes Researchers said that, campaigns typically impersonate Apple Support, financial institutions, or payment providers and rely on urgent narratives involving suspicious transactions, account lockouts, fraudulent charges, or refunds.
The initial FaceTime call does not require malware or an iOS exploit. Its effectiveness comes from impersonation and urgency.
A live video or audio call can appear more credible than a standard phishing email, especially when attackers use familiar branding and claim to be responding to an active security incident.
However, the risk increases sharply when social engineering is combined with unpatched software. Credential theft can give attackers access to Apple IDs, email inboxes, banking portals, cloud backups, and identity-recovery workflows.
A separate browser-side vulnerability or malicious website may then provide a route to execute code on a device that has not received the latest iOS security fixes.
This layered approach enables attackers to move beyond a single stolen password. In campaigns such as DarkSword, threat actors reportedly target unpatched iPhones with exploit chains designed to convert browser interaction into deeper device access.
While a FaceTime scam itself is not evidence that an iPhone has been exploited, it can serve as the first stage in a broader compromise operation.
The exposure window is widened by users who postpone iOS updates. Apple patches vulnerabilities that could enable privilege escalation, remote code execution, information disclosure, or exploitation through web content.
Devices that remain on older releases may retain known weaknesses after fixes are publicly available.
Users should disconnect suspicious interactions from decision-making. Apple and banks are unlikely to use an unexpected FaceTime call to request credentials, payment information, device passcodes, or one-time verification codes.
Anyone receiving such a request should end the call and contact the organization through its official website, application, or verified support number.
Apple recommends keeping iPhones and iPads updated, avoiding unsolicited requests for sensitive data, and independently verifying any claimed account issue.
