Massive Data Breach – Hackers Stolen More than 1.5 Million Patients Personal Details

SingHealth suffers a massive Data Breach, hackers exfiltrated the database that contains 1.5 million patients records from 1 May 2015 to 4 July 2018.

The database contains patients personal details that include name, NRIC number, address, gender, race, and date of birth. The database also includes the medicine details of 160,000 patients.

Singapore’s Ministry of Health (MOH) data breach statement reads “the records were not tampered with, i.e. no records were amended or deleted. No other patient records, such as diagnosis, test results or doctors’ notes, were breached.”

According to Cyber Security Agency of Singapore (CSA), the cyber attack is a well-planned one and the attackers particularly targeted Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s personal details and disposed medicines.

Database Intrusion

SingHealth’s IT team detected an unusual activity on one of their databases on 4 July 2018, and they acted to halt the activity immediately.

Further investigations confirmed it was a cyber attack and the data exfiltrated between 27 June 2018 to 4 July 2018.

CSA investigations confirmed that attackers managed to obtain privileged user credential and gain privileged access to the database.

SingHealth says patients will receive an SMS notification over the next five days. Patients can also access the Health Buddy mobile app or SingHealth website to check if they are affected by this incident.

This is the second massive Data Breach within a week targeting the healthcare Industry. On July 14th hackers got access to the LabCorp’s network which Puts Millions of Patient Records at Risk.
