Microsoft Update Disrupts VPS Access for Windows Subsystem for Linux Users

Microsoft’s October 2025 non-security update (KB5067036) has introduced a critical connectivity issue affecting Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) users relying on third-party virtual private network solutions.

Released on October 28, 2025, this update disrupts VPN access when mirrored networking mode is enabled in WSL.

The issue manifests when users attempt to connect to corporate resources or enterprise VPN services through a Windows host running the update.

Systems display a “No route to host” error message, preventing access to protected resources even though the Windows host itself maintains standard VPN connectivity.

Users who rely on VPN-connected services experience immediate service failures, leaving them unable to access enterprise applications and databases.

The underlying cause involves how VPN applications interact with network protocols in the updated environment.

The VPN client’s virtual network interface fails to respond to Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) requests, preventing proper communication between the host system and VPN gateway.

This network communication breakdown effectively isolates WSL from VPN resources while the Windows host remains connected.

Cisco Secure Client (formerly Cisco AnyConnect) and OpenVPN have been confirmed as affected VPN platforms.

Both solutions rely on ARP responses for route discovery and connection establishment, making them vulnerable to the networking changes introduced by this update.

Users running either VPN solution alongside WSL mirrored networking will experience connectivity problems.

The impact primarily affects enterprise environments rather than individual users. Home editions of Windows Home and Pro show minimal susceptibility to this issue.

Organizations with managed IT environments, remote workers using corporate VPNs, and DirectAccess deployments are most affected by operational disruption. The problem blocks legitimate business access across the affected user base.

Microsoft has acknowledged the issue and stated that the investigation is ongoing. Currently, no workaround or permanent fix is available.

The company has committed to sharing additional information as the investigation progresses. Users experiencing connectivity issues should avoid installing KB5067036 until Microsoft releases a corrected update that addresses the ARP response failure.

This update disruption highlights the complexity of maintaining compatibility across multiple networking layers in modern Windows environments.

Organizations that are heavily dependent on WSL, combined with corporate VPN access, should delay adoption of this update until Microsoft provides a remediation.
