Apple Inc. says its commitment to user privacy, emphasizing that its products, such as the digital assistant Siri, are designed to safeguard personal data from the very beginning and not used for any advertising purpose.

“Apple has never used Siri data to build marketing profiles, never made it available for advertising, and never sold it to anyone for any purpose. We are constantly developing technologies to make Siri even more private, and will continue to do so.”

The tech giant highlights that privacy is integral to its design philosophy, focusing on principles such as data minimization, on-device intelligence, transparency, and strong security measures.

This comes alongside news of a $95 million settlement to resolve a lawsuit alleging privacy violations by Siri.

Apple prioritizes privacy in its Siri functionality by utilizing substantial on-device processing. When users engage with Siri, whether through voice or text, a significant portion of the processing occurs right on the device.

This approach guarantees that personal information, like message content or user inquiries, is not sent to Apple’s servers without necessity.

For instance, when Siri reads unread messages or provides suggestions via widgets, all the processing occurs locally, ensuring user privacy is upheld.

Apple guarantees that only essential data is sent for functionalities that need server interaction.

“The audio of user requests is processed entirely on device using the Neural Engine, unless a user chooses to share it with Apple.”

“Siri requests are not associated with users’ Apple IDs or phone numbers; rather, a unique identifier specific to the device is utilized, ensuring that personal identity remains confidential.”

Furthermore, Apple only keeps audio recordings of Siri interactions if users choose to opt-in for service improvement, giving users authority over their data.

Apple has made a notable progress in its privacy initiatives with the launch of Private Cloud Compute.

This technology enhances the privacy protections of iPhones in the cloud, enabling advanced Apple Intelligence features while guaranteeing that user data stays private and is not stored or accessible to Apple beyond what is necessary to fulfill the immediate request.

“Privacy is a fundamental human right,” said a representative from Apple. We are dedicated to creating products and services that safeguard this right.

“We do not utilize Siri data for creating marketing profiles, advertising purposes, or for selling it to any third parties.”

Apple’s dedication goes further than just technology; it encompasses policy and transparency as well. Those who are curious can explore Apple’s privacy practices further by going to apple.com/privacy.

This announcement arrives during a period of growing concern over digital privacy, as users around the world are becoming more aware and are demanding improved data protection from technology firms.

Apple’s recent privacy improvements with Siri may establish a new standard for the management of user data by digital assistants, possibly impacting industry norms.
