Raspberry Pi has announced the launch of a new 2GB variant of the Raspberry Pi 5, priced at an affordable $50.

This release makes powerful computing accessible to a wider audience, fulfilling the original Raspberry Pi dream of providing an affordable, general-purpose desktop computer.

A New Era in Affordable Computing

The Raspberry Pi 5, launched just over ten months ago, has already been hailed as a groundbreaking product.

It is approximately 150 times more powerful than the original Raspberry Pi released in 2012, thanks to advancements in engineering and the economies of scale achieved by producing millions of units annually.

Despite these improvements, the cost of some components has increased, making the previous lowest-cost variant, the 4GB model, available for $60.

The new 2GB variant addresses this issue by utilizing a cost-optimized D0 stepping of the BCM2712 application processor.

This strategic move has allowed Raspberry Pi to reduce the price by $10, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious users without compromising on performance.

Innovative Engineering with the New Chip

The 2GB Raspberry Pi 5 continues to leverage the powerful BCM2712C1 application processor, a 16nm chip developed in collaboration with Broadcom.

This processor features a quad-core Arm Cortex-A76 running at 2.4GHz and the latest VideoCore multimedia platform.

While the chip contains additional functionalities for other markets, these are not required for the Raspberry Pi and have been disabled, reducing costs.

The new D0 stepping removes unnecessary features, maintaining the same high performance and multimedia capabilities as its predecessors. This innovation ensures that users experience no functional difference, while the cost savings are passed on to consumers.

Optimized Performance with Raspberry Pi OS

One of the standout features of the Raspberry Pi ecosystem is its custom operating system, Raspberry Pi OS.

This OS is designed to optimize resource usage, providing a smooth user experience even on devices with lower memory and processing power.

This efficiency allows the new 2GB variant to run the latest version of Raspberry Pi OS effectively, making it suitable for a wide range of applications.

For users with less demanding needs, such as basic computing tasks or educational projects, the 2GB Raspberry Pi 5 offers an excellent balance of performance and affordability.

Meanwhile, those requiring more memory for tasks like dual 4Kp60 display output or heavy multitasking may still prefer the higher-capacity models.

With the launch of this new variant, Raspberry Pi continues to empower users to explore, innovate, and push the boundaries of what is possible with affordable computing technology.
