Houzz Suffers a Data Breach, Alerts Users to Change Password

Houzz suffered a data breach that exposes user personal data. The home design firm learned that user data was accessed by an unauthorized third party.

The data breach was learned by the design firm in late December 2018 and the firm immediately launched a forensics investigation.

“Our security team has a number of ways to learn about potential security vulnerabilities, including our own active methods and third-party reporting. The investigation is ongoing” reads breach report.

It was not clear on how many users might have affected with the breach. The company has notified those who may have been affected.

The company has notified law enforcement agencies about the breach and they also engaged a leading forensic firm for investigation. The firm recommends all the users to reset their passwords.

Following details Impacted – Houzz

Publically available information from user profile such as first name, last name, city, state, country and profile description.

Certain internal identifiers such as the country of the site used, whether a user has a profile image.

Internal account information such as user ID, prior Houzz usernames, one-way encrypted passwords salted uniquely per user, IP address, and city and ZIP code inferred from IP address.

Publically available information such as current Houzz username and if a user logs into Houzz through Facebook, the user’s public Facebook ID.

The company confirms that financial information Social Security numbers or payment card, bank account, or other financial information are not affected.
